We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayana Cummings and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ayana, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. Growing up in an area largely populated by Black people is something that I am constantly thankful for. My family, friends, classmates, and teachers looking like me helped to nurture a healthy level of self-confidence. Graduating from Alabama State University inducted me into a family that I will always be grateful for. It plays a major impact on how I carry myself today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a percussionist, composer, and producer. Me being a percussionist first largely influences all other areas of my music creation. I get super excited to collaborate and perform with other musicians and artists who are committed to bettering their craft. Being in band all throughout my schooling, then majoring in music has taught me more than I could have imagined. Additionally, all the professional experiences I’ve had performing have helped me learn how to apply what I’ve learned in classrooms to real world situations. My brand and website is soundsofayana.com. I want my music to spark joy in those who listen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My idea of showing a friend a good time is having the perfect balance of going out and chilling inside. We’d spend half the time eating great food, partying at different spots, and checking out some live performances. The other time we’d spend watching great movies, listening to music, and collaborating on some music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have an incredible family and circle of friends that are very supportive. Their love and encouragement helps to keep me going.
