We had the good fortune of connecting with Austin Honeyman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Austin, what do you attribute your success to?
My brand was created long ago. The name Disher came from a friend from high school, Chris Schmidt. I played basketball in high school and had some wild assists, or as the kids back then would say, a wild “dish”. I was also working on a radio station in Galesburg, Illinois, so the full name came out as DJ Disher. I have just carried it along since 2008 and it has wildly worked in my favor. “Disher. Dishin’ off the hits!”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart from other recording & mixing engineers is I make my sessions more personal. I truly sit down and get to know the artists I work with, listen to their ideas, and help implement their ideas into there craft as well. I got to this point by wanting to create my own music. I wanted to be able to say I created a project from start to finish completely by myself. It wasn’t easy at all, but hustling is all I have ever known. My mother and father were a big part of my work ethic. My mother taught me that if its something you want (or ordered) that it should be just how you like it. So when it came to music, and I didn’t like the outcome of my product, I learned that I need to figure out how I want it to sound, and how to do it myself.
My father is the hardest working person I have ever met. I really look up to how he carried his life, and utilize the things that I have learned everyday in life. It is not always about being easy, but how can you make it benefit in your favor.
Some lessons that I have learned along the way is that “there are multiple ways to skin a cat.” and that “Silence is betrayal.”
I want the world to see the work that I have put in didn’t just happen over night. It’s not about motivation, it’s about being consistent, even on the days that you don’t want to work, you still have to work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the MGM Grand. It is one of the livest, and chillest places at the same time. I would also take them to Quality Touch Studios, to show them what a professional studio environment is truly like!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I want to shoutout my wife Rachel. Through the ups and the downs off the music industry she has always supported my vision. I would like to shout out William Bowser & Antonio Wayside for the mentorship and guidance. Shoutout to my team next to me M6xteen & Biggz for constantly staying productive with me, and challenging each other to become the best version of ourselves. Shout out to Rick Will & Darnell “StoryTell Nell” Jamison for believing in me! Lastly I want to shout out Blake Benedict for continuing to push me to keep going on my artistry!
