Meet Auntie Cammy

We had the good fortune of connecting with Auntie Cammy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Auntie Cammy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I lived in North Carolina where the only thing open late for food is Cookout, McDonald’s & Jack in the Box….all three are mediocre unless you drinking, then that’s when they taste the BEST. Not to mention, when I get a craving – I answer it. Every time. If that means taking chicken wings out the freezer & waiting, I’ll do that so it’s only right to get up and cook for others that share a similar need for good food – late at night.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I would say “Auntie Cammy’s Kitchen” is different than most catering companies because I use fresher ingredients, locally sourced from the farmers market.
I put love in my food, because I actually care about your wellbeing. Even something as small as using avocado oil instead of canola — that makes a big difference over time.
To me, you aren’t just a client. You are like family. A cousin, niece, brother, you know….
I’m half Puerto Rican and half African American so the flavor profiles I offer, are one in one. That’s what I want people to know.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I was living in Georgia, I lived in Atlanta near the airport but I also lived in Douglasville too (that was when I was like 19).
I’ve never been into the nightlife like that but Phase One in Stone Mountain….will always be my favorite place to go to when I’m out there. VIP wings on Old National is open til 4am so definitely would go out there. Two different parts of the city, I know.
But during the day, Dekalb farmer’s market and that seasoning wall….. there will always be a place in my heart for that.
But as far as Houston, I haven’t found any places to go and show off other than Torchy’s tacos soooo…. there’s that.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shout out to my grandma & my girlfriend. My grandma let me experiment in her kitchen at a young age and my girlfriend is also my prep cook that helps me keep a level head when I feel like I’m doing too much.
