We had the good fortune of connecting with Auntie Bev and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Auntie Bev, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe there are three important factors behind the success of the “Auntie Bev. brand”. First and foremost, my teenage grandson has been truly instrumental in helping me to create this brand. He is the one who encouraged me to join TikTok three years ago to teach his generation vocabulary words to help them improve their communication skills. I was extremely reluctant because I saw TikTok as a waste of time that I could devote elsewhere. Nonetheless, I ultimately jumped on the bandwagon and started developing the Auntie Bev. persona.

The second factor is understanding who my audience is. I have more than 2.5 million followers across three social media platforms (IG, TikTok, FB) and they are all different in some ways. I believe once you understand your audience, you are able to create content they can and will appreciate. A video I create for my TikTok followers many not be the same one I deliver to my FB audience and I do recognize that. Coupled with this is ENGAGEMENT. It is extremely important for me to interact with my followers. In the beginning I was doing it rather frequently but now that I get hundreds of comments it has become a little more difficult but I do try to comment on as many as I can without spending all of my time on the platform.

The third factor is being CONSISTENT. I believe the reason I have such large followings is because you can expect to see at least two videos from me PER DAY—yes, I said per day. The followers come to expect me to introduce a word they may, nor may not, know and to use it in a sentence to give them context. I believe the reason many people don’t achieve the success they desire on social media is due to lack of consistency.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first started introducing vocabulary words online, I received quite a bit of pushback from young people who told me I had no business on TikTok and I belonged on Facebook. My grandson told me to just ignore them and also taught me how to drown out the negativity by blocking people, which I now refer to as “Block and Bless.” Soon, I began to realize that there were people online who really wanted to learn so I focused on delivering quality information on a daily basis. Even as my following started growing exponentially, I never got caught up into the numbers. My attitude is, if only one person benefits from what I’m offering then I’ve done my job.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t know enough about Atlanta to answer this question

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There would be no Auntie Bev without my grandson, Jarod Bryant. He saw something in me and believed I could cultivate my knowledge and expertise with his GenZ peers to help them improve their communication skills.. My husband, Nate, keeps me grounded and last, but not least, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
