We had the good fortune of connecting with Audrey Blackmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Audrey, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk similarly to how I view relying on discipline rather than motivation. It’s a necessity for growth. In my experience, if you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t trying. Taking chances and experiencing setbacks is crucial to your journey because they represent the catalyst, the shift that will either spark your passion or put an end to it. Taking a risk is what started my professional career—a chance I took in college without knowing what to expect or how to attain results. While I was expanding my clientele, I worked hard to surround myself with people I could learn from and never stopped looking for ways to improve my skill.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are two quotes that have served as guiding principles for me. The first is one I created: “Don’t apologize for being human.” and the second by Pablo Picasso: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Growing up, I was always the girl who messed up and was never taken seriously. The thing I loved best about video recording was that you could make the footage look however you wanted it to, regardless of how well or poorly it was shot. You can correct those errors or transform those “errors” into works of art. The final say in all artistic matters belonged to you. After gaining this newfound self-assurance in my imaginative abilities, I was free to follow an interest of mine without the interference of others; it was from this experience that I derived my quote. Don’t be ashamed of who you are; you never know who your genuineness will inspire. The brand-building content I’ve been making makes me feel like I’ve accomplished that, if not more. My second quote is the one I keep returning to whenever I’m asked, “Why videography?” My purpose as an artist has always been to evoke an emotional response from the audience, and if my work can serve as a conduit to that end, then I consider myself a success.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without my mom, Mavis, I wouldn’t be able to share my story of perseverance and the great fortune that has come my way. When it comes to my professional life, she is just as much of a rock and the center of my world as she is in my personal life. When I finally decided to pursue being a videographer full-time, she provided me with the constant support that has helped me and everyone I’ve worked with along the road.
