We had the good fortune of connecting with Audra Davison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Audra, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Writing! Whether I’m writing a script or writing prose, I also get the sense that this is what I’m supposed to be doing with my life. Writing is my favorite form of creative expression. And, I can’t wait to share my writings, my stories, with a global audience.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a screenwriter, filmmaker, and author. And I believe that my drive and my ability to fully execute my creative visions are what set me apart from others.

I am most excited about, The Hale Academy, the short film that I released in December 2021. It’s about a magical HBCU and explores Africana spirituality through a magical lens.

I believe that the connections that I’ve made at Spelman with my professors and with my classmates have helped me to get to where I am today. I’ve been able to learn a lot about my creative process. For instance, in order to develop as a creative, I have had to be open to constructive feedback. And as a writer, I’ve learned not to simply wait for inspiration to spark, but to write consistently and routinely. The more that I write the better I get at my craft. And while this might have been slightly challenging, it has helped to advance my overall skills as a writer and filmmaker.

Ultimately, I want the world to know that my brand is focused on making creative content rooted in cultural significance and relevance. This is precisely why The Hale Academy is based upon my research about traditional Africana religiosity. Africana spirituality is underrepresented in traditional cinema. And, it is my hope to continue to produce culturally relevant content in order to change this.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place that I’d go is to the Georgia Aquarium. Even though I’ve been there several times, I always enjoy my visits. The aquarium is huge and is constantly opening new exhibits.

One of my favorite spots to eat at is Two Urban Licks. Their food is delicious!

I’d also recommend going to Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Beltine because the outdoor scenery at these parks is amazing! Perfect for a bike ride or a picnic.

And, finally, I’d recommend going to Skyline Park (after dark), it’s a fun spot for a friend’s night out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to dedicate my shoutout to my brother, Robert Davison IV. He is a motion graphic designer, who also served as the production manager for my recent animated short film The Hale Academy. My grandmother, Audrey Sharpe, also assisted on this project as she helped in the editorial stages of my screenplay. And she was a voice actor for one of my characters in the film as well. I am also grateful to Dr. Dianne M. Stewart Ph.D. of the Religion and African American Studies department at Emory University. She guided me in intensive research about African spirituality which I incorporated in The Hale Academy. Lastly, I want to thank my professors and peers at Spelman College and Morehouse College for their support, and for providing me with the skills necessary to produce my animated short.
