We had the good fortune of connecting with Aspen Broadnax and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aspen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I honestly didn’t really think of starting my own business, it really came to me organically. One of my quarantine projects was really just something I was doing on the side for myself as something for me. I am a huge sneaker lover. I wanted to create a tie dye sock to match all my sneakers in my closet. I simply began to post and share my tie dye journey through my social media and it just became a demand. My first buyer was one of my friends who is a sneaker lover as well. My creative juices begin flowing and I just keep making different colors/styles that would attract. My best friend was super supportive she literally helped me create my logo and website. The people in my corner really kept me motivated and inspired to keep going. My thought process formed as I began to keep going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is tie dye socks and hoodies. I am most proud of what my brand stands for, my grandmother’s legacy. It is so fulfilling seeing my grandmother’s face on each package. I am still learning each and every day of how to make my brand stronger. It has not been an easy journey especially in the middle of a pandemic and staying home. I think being and working in the house has been the hardest struggle for me because I am used to get out. During this pandemic I have learned to adapt to being home though. Some days I get discouraged but I just remind myself to keep going and stay grounded. The lessons I have learned along the way is definitely to be patience with myself, trust in myself and listen to my gut. I am still working a full time job so I learning how to balance and use my time efficiently.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is definitely known for their food spots, so I would definitely take them to Breakfast at Barney’s in downtown Atlanta. Our next spot would be Ponce City Market for a little shopping and we may hit the rooftop for miniature golf, day drinking, and arcade games. I would also take them to Perimeter for local shopping at my favorite mall. If you like the outdoors, we could definitely hit Stone Mountain or Piedmont Park for a picnic. We could also take a bike ride down the Beltline. We have to go to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream for some of the best ICE CREAM ever.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my grandmother, she is the motivation and face of my SockLadyATL brand. I wanted to pay homage to my grandmother who was one of my biggest supporters. She just remind me to keep going and pursue my dreams. I’ve always been a dreamer so it was important to capture her in someway with my sock brand. The profits are being used to renovate her home. I also want to shout out every person who has purchased a pair of socks or supported me in some shape or form. I truly love you guys.
