We had the good fortune of connecting with Asia Ruoma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When it comes to risk taking, I immediately get excited. I took my biggest risk when I decided to leave my hometown Washington, DC in 2015 to relocate to Atlanta. I left everything and everyone I know. I had no plan, and only the finances to move into my new place. But what I did have was my faith and a vision to become a successful clothing designer. My first year of launching my brand was my most successful year in business. Shout out to rapper Young Thug for loving and wearing my first custom design piece which brought attention to the brand… and it all happened from taking the risks. Most importantly, a leap of faith!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
PRIMOGÉNITO is a stylish brand with the concept of simplicity. The name means “first born” in Spanish. Which I am my mom’s first child. I wanted a brand name to represent me, so I thought back to very beginning of, me.
I feel what sets me apart is my love for simplicity, and my passion for menswear. I create with menswear as the blueprint but still keeping it to where even the most stylish female can wear it with her flyest shoe option to set a new trend. Staying true to my vision of designing and seeing others bring my vision to life, is what I’m always most excited about.
I got to where I am today honestly from taking risks. It wasn’t easy. I overcame it by making sacrifices and unapologetically taking moments to isolate myself. It sounds cliché but, with isolation comes elevation.
The biggest lesson I learned, is to step aside out of my own way and keep going!
I want the world to know my end goal, which is to leave an impact that motivates and inspire people globally that can relate to my story. I want everything I create to be seen more than clothing, yet a reminder that they too can take risks to accomplish their dreams no matter how big or small the obstacles they face.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would have to say my first stop would be Busy Bee’s! Southern soul food is a must try. Followed by Atlanta’s museum of arts, Lenox Mall to shop, the Battery, Ponce City Market and last but not least, a classy lounge with drinks + hookah for the culture!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my sister, Artist Antonia Marie for always being available to support my moments of indecisiveness, or simply days when I would be experiencing creative block.
Her supportive opinion is a second set of eyes I can always rely on.
