We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Thrasher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Atlanta, GA. I was raised in the suburbs and in a household where my siblings and I were quirky, artistic and overly creative. Imagine a house full of artists and nerds. My first role model was my older brother, Myron. Myron was into comics, anime and video games. Being the younger sister, I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. I mimicked everything he did until I came into my own. Apparently, one thing that did stay with me is my love for art and nerd culture. This is the explanation behind my business. As my siblings and I got older we began bouncing creative ideas off of each other. We just want to see one another win in any capacity. We’re very supportive of each other.
What should our readers know about your business?
Nexy is practically my baby. It was hard to even get through the mental block of even starting a business. I didn’t know what to do or how to go about it. I just knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life working and making someone else richer. I’ve gained my entrepreneur spirit from my father and we both have similarities in that regards. We both don’t like being told what to do or when to do it. The name “Nexy” came from the words “nerd” and “sexy” combined. Nexy was born from the idea of creating nerd-themed undergarments. I felt there was a gap in the market for it and I enjoy wearing loungewear and undergarments around my home. Not only that but there wasn’t enough customization in the underwear industry for nerds. Some of challenges I’ve overcame was the learning curve. Again, I didn’t know where to even start. I had to learn how to create my website, get a virtual mailbox, trademarking and influencer marketing. Influencer marketing is so important because how else will people be able to trust you and your business if they don’t see other people in your products besides you? I’ll admit I have a bit of an advantage because of my following and I’ve been influencing for a while now, therefore I know how to take photos and edit. I want the world to know Nexy is a brand that exudes the three C’s. Cute, comfort and Confident is what describes the essence of Nexy. I want people to wear it and feel those three things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie were to visit me and I planned a week long trip, I’d first take her to Dunkin’ Donuts to get her coffee. She loves their coffee over Starbucks. I’d take her to either play laser tag or go shopping. She loves splurging and she’s the kind of girl that will buy whatever she wants when she wants it. We’d head back to my place, order pizza and binge an anime, and watch a K-drama or a Bollywood film. We’ve recently became addicted to Bollywood films. She’d more than likely fall asleep after eating. Then I’d take her to a lounge. We both don’t care for clubs and are more into lounges. As for myself, I think the most important thing in Atlanta to try once is brunch. Atlanta is a city that’s big on brunch. My warning is to expect to wait a very long time because the entire city shows out. Revery is a VR bar I think is worth checking out if you’re into the alt scene. Because I’m a bit nerdy I can’t forget to mention Battle and Brew. It’s a really dope barcade! If you’re a foodie, I highly suggest Ponce City Market.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my friends that have always been there for me and that motivated me to start my business in the first place. Shoutout to my siblings, parents, Kimberly Vann and my mentor Chloe Clark for giving me unbiased criticism on anything I create. They’re very honest and will not withhold what they truly think. I can’t do anything but respect that. That’s also what pushes me to work harder and think outside of the box. Lastly, thank you to my supporters on social media. I literally wouldn’t own any of the photography equipment, computers, business resources I have without them. I’m very thankful for how things worked out.
