We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Smith Ovrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
As a business owner for the past six years, my work-life balance has really shifted. When you’re running your own show, it’s easy to end up working non-stop, and the whole 9 to 5 thing goes out the window. I’m often asked if I miss having my weekends off, because I am often booked with brides now, but honestly, I don’t even feel like I’m working. When you love what you do, it’s more like living your passion every day, and weekends off just aren’t a big deal.
After hustling and grinding for so long, I’ve started to feel the beginnings of burnout. I’ve come to realize that I never want to feel burnt out from doing what I love. It’s essential to prioritize personal time more, and I’m recognizing the significance of having loved ones and good people around to maintain balance. As much as I adore my work, I’ve learned that taking care of myself and nurturing relationships are just as crucial for a fulfilling life. With that being said, I still absolutely struggle with not accepting every single job that comes my way. I try to block out my calendar for specific things months in advance so I won’t accidentally book a job. This forces me to take time for myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my love for contour. The way I do makeup is very Victoria’s Secret model meets Makeup by Mario. The way I do makeup is very skin focused, My main objective is making sure your skin looks flawless. I also have a relentless work ethic. Even when I have to turn down jobs because I’m fully booked, it truly pains me. I strive to showcase my work to as many people as possible, building trust with new clients. I take immense pride in my education, having graduated with a bachelor’s in science from Georgia Southern University in 2014, and obtaining my Master Cosmetology License from Paul Mitchell The School Esani in 2018. Continuously pursuing additional hands-on classes and online training keeps me excited about my craft, especially the Lauren D’Amelio master class I took in Redbank NJ March 2023. I move and admire Lauren and her skills, so that class was extremely meaningful to me.
Starting from the bottom and climbing the ladder hasn’t been easy, but I believe there’s no top, only onwards and upwards. As a business owner, you learn as you go. Every new challenge is an opportunity to brainstorm solutions and keep moving forward.
I’ve learned that you can’t do it alone. Having a strong faith and loved ones is crucial through the highs and lows. Perfectionism can be an obstacle, but I’ve come to understand that patience, self-love, and a little uncomfortability are essential for growth and success.
The world needs to know that there’s room for everyone to thrive. We can all be friends and support each other rather than seeing everyone as competition. Continuous learning is vital. Every individual offers a unique perspective, and there’s always something new to learn. Even when you think you’ve mastered your craft, a new method of doing things will surface, or a new product will grace the Sephora shelves. I believe no matter how big or small the artist we can all learn something from each other.
My brand is built on kindness and love. The most fulfilling moments come from seeing the transformation in the everyday women who sit in my chair. It’s incredibly rewarding to help them see their natural beauty shine through, often for the first time. Their reactions fill my cup, reminding me why I love what I do and giving me purpose on a daily basis.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week-long trip, I’d take my best friend to some amazing spots. We’d hit up the Beltline, beginning with Bar Taco in Inman Park and making a pit stop at Victory for a Jack and Coke icee. We’d take a leisurely walk from Inman Park to Krog Street Market, passing Ponce along the way. Finishing our restaurant tour at MF Sushi. Two Urban Licks is another favorite of mine, and we’d also check out Garden Room and Himitsu.
No trip to Atlanta would be complete without a visit to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Aquarium. Since I live OTP, we’d definitely spend time in downtown Alpharetta, the Avalon, downtown Roswell, and don’t forget the cute little winery with goats and llamas to pet in Cumming called Stoney J’s. Of course, we’d also indulge in some shopping along the way. Maybe we could even get pampered and get some facials or mani pedis.
In addition, we would definitely hit up a good hiking spot like Stone Mountain or Kennesaw Mountain for a good workout. Depending on the time of year, shooting the hooch is always a good time. It’s a packed itinerary, but it’s guaranteed to show my friend the best of the area!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband and my closest family and friends, who have been by my side every step of the way, offering unwavering support. Additionally, I want to extend gratitude to my clients who have entrusted me with their glam and have spread the word about my work. I also owe credit to fellow industry professionals who have collaborated with me, endorsed my work, and referred clients. And last but not least, a special shoutout goes to my bridal glam team, the amazing women of Babeland Bridal. Together, we’ve fostered a supportive and loving space within the industry. We learn, grow, and work together, always striving for each other’s success. I’m incredibly grateful for the sisterhood we’ve built.
