We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first started my business, I wanted something that’d make people feel beautiful and comfortable. Especially since we were in a pandemic at the time, everyone was at home, so I wanted to create a brand that would help people enjoy their time in the house with family wearing my sleepwear. That’s how I came up with the name “Fetching Sleepwear”. Then later on, I wanted to add cosmetics. I am a makeup artist and love everything makeup, so I decided to create handmade lipglosses which were added to the brand. After that I decided to add lashes, handmade body butters, and body shimmer oils. This lead me to rename my business The Fetching Brand!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, what my “dream” was. I spent years trying to figure out who I was and what I was put on earth to do. I tried going to college and studying pharmacy tech, but my heart was just not in it. After college, I spent time reflecting my life and what I should do that would make me happy. One day my mom told me I should try doing hair. I was known to stay in the mirror trying different hairstyles and trends, so I thought that’d actually be something I’d be interested in. So in 2013 I attended beauty school at Empire Beauty School in Gwinnett County and graduated in 2014. I then got my Master Cosmetology license in 2016. In 2017 is when I got into the makeup industry. That’s when I realized this is it, this is my passion, my dream, to create looks. I would watch videos on Instagram and Facebook. I’d spend hours practicing in the mirror. Makeup gave me a feeling that nothing else has ever given me. I went from doing my own makeup to now, doing others! Since 2012 I’ve always wanted to have my own business, I would research endlessly on how to start and build a business. I never liked working for people because in the back of my mind, I always knew I wanted to work for myself. So, in 2019-2020 I finally decided to make it a reality. I incorporated my love for beauty, fashion, and makeup into my business and created The Fetching Brand. I am still growing and learning but I am proud of how far I’ve come and how I’ve actually made my dreams a reality!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would probably go to Ponce City Market and go for brunch at one of the restaurants there and a do a little shopping. For drinks, I’d go to the daiquiri factory.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom. My world. She inspires and motivates me constantly. She has a devotional on Amazon called “My Voice His Lead” and also a writing business called “Perfectionist Writing Services”.
