We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
There answer is actually quite simple-I’m still here. It’s great to be inspired by others, but I believe that we have to look at our own track record for true inspiration. If I look at all the times I felt like giving up, all the times I almost believed the negativity thrown at me, I’m still still here. Nothing about my life has been ordinary. I was born at home. How many people can say that? Lol I spent years in foster care, years as homeless teenager in high school, years in an abusive marriage but look at me now. I’m here doing this interview with you. I’m truly grateful for this entire journey that life has given me. Bottom line, if you are still here, don’t give up. You are counting on you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Nothing about my life is ordinary. I grew up partially in fostercare, was adopted for 8 years, and then back on my own since I was 16. I never moved back home. I’m grateful to be where I am today. I got married at 19 and divorced by 25 with 2 school aged kids. I was making $11 an hour. As my children got older and more involved with things, I needed my time to be free to be accessible to them. I had no support at all in Charlotte so it was on me to figure it out. After I business I was working for was sold, I took a leap of faith and started working for myself full time. That was almost 10 year ago!

I started Lux Body Care in 2019 because I wanted to have fun and give back to the community directly and indirectly at the same time. Lux Body Care is divided into 2 parts.. alternative health & holistic day spa & natural skincare.

The skincare portion of Lux Body Care was inspired by my son. He suffers from eczema really severely and could only use certain creams. Many didn’t work and caused other skin issues. My natural skincare restored his skin within a few days! I figured the rest of the world can also use it too! It’s all about having fun and loving what you do. Lux Body Care has literally changed people’s lives!

Yes, I am a business woman today but I’m also a former foster child, domestic abuse survivor, former customer service rep, etc. I’ve worn many hats and all have made me the woman I am today. If I can do it, anyone can. All you have to do is set healthy boundaries with toxic people you and believe in yourself. Things will fall into place.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I just moved here late last year so I’m still discovering places. My go to spot so far is Palm 78 in Alpharetta. I love the private, upscale atmosphere.

The Avalon also has wonderful shops and eateries as well.

I love to go to thrift stores or a great year sale too! Goodwill is my favorite!

I’m a super low key and private person so I’m not too big on big crowds. The itinerary would “no itinerary” and we could see where the day takes us.

Food is based on mood. I’m a vegetarian and most people are not. Most of the time, I go off of whatever my guest would like to eat and I will work with the menu.

Any suggestions?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tonya Wilson Reid, my adoption social worker, gets all the credit for my entrepreneurial success. She became my social worker when I was in 2nd grade after already being in the system for many years. I had many caseworkers over the years, but Tonya was the only one who took my situation seriously. She was young, beautiful and fierce and I loved everything about her. When I was in 2nd grade, I was removed from a foster home and placed in a temporary foster care shelter. Tonya, along with my 2nd grade teacher, sat me down to encourage me to do the best I could in school. It was hard to focus on school because my homelike was so chaotic.
It paid off! I won a reading award at the end of the school year. I didn’t want to go because I didn’t have “real” parents or a “real family” to come to the event.
I was devastated and ashamed.
Tonya showed up and cheered me on! She even made sure I took a picture to commemorate the moment!
When I returned home to the temporary foster shelter, I was awarded a present from the staff as well-a brown, Fisher Price record player and a Michael Jackson album. (I was in love with Michael at the time!)
I played my record until bedtime and hid it from the rest of the children while I was at school. When I returned from school, eager to hear MJ, I discovered my record was broken in pieces and my record player’s needle was gone. I was heartbroken once again.
Tonya reached out a few days later as my grades were slipping again. She came to my school, pulled me aside and said “They have broken your record player and record. Those are just things that can be replaced. They can’t take away what you learn.” I vowed that day to learn as much as I could and I’m a self-proclaimed “proud nerd.”
Tonya and I lost touch when I got adopted but I found her when I became an adult. She has been in my life ever since.
As an entrepreneur, Tonya has been fully supportive. She never misses an event that I have, and she’s always there for me when I needed her, even if it’s just a conversation with priceless advice.
Tonya is truly irreplaceable and she’s an example to all social workers. She’s not just a caseworker, she’s a life worker.
