How has your background shaped the person you are today?
AG: I grew up with a loving family in Greensboro, North Carolina. My parents owned a real estate agency, and I spent a lot of my childhood watching them run the family business and help other families actualize their home ownership dreams. My parents have always been super supportive of my interests and invested in my education and enrichment activities. I would often attend academic and creative arts summer camps and after school programs. My mom, Thelma, was always there to help me with homework, papers, and school projects. My dad, Paul, never missed an awards ceremony for me and is quite literally my biggest cheerleader. My parents’ investment of time, attention, and love, undoubtedly shaped me into the woman I am today. I understand what it means to nurture someone into greatness because it was done with me. My siblings, nieces, and extended family have also been instrumental in my growth. Their encouragement and support keep me going. My family and friends have helped Divine Eye Media flourish.

IO: My upbringing, family, and experience as a first generation college graduate have heavily influenced who I am today. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. I come from a large family and I have five other sisters. Both of my parents immigrated to the United States, so while I was growing up I was able to develop a unique perspective which consisted of the customs and beliefs of my Somali heritage and the American culture. I’m also a first generation college graduate. All of these factors have shaped my personal life, fueled my ambitions, and motivated me to continue growing everyday.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
AG: I really like the international culture vibe of the Clairmont Road/Buford Highway area. There are many great locally owned businesses with flavorful cuisine and lounges to enjoy. Desta Ethiopian Kitchen and Therapy Lounge are my go-to spots.

IO: If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever I would definitely take them to Ponce City Market. There are great shops, dining options, and quick access to the beltline.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
AG: I’m dedicating my shoutout to the Almighty Creator who is known by many names across cultures and religions. Divine Eye Media was established with the belief that creative abilities are a gift from God. The divine lives in all of us and connects us in many ways. I’m so grateful for my connection to Divine and for my many blessings including family, health, and prosperity.

IO: I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, Kowsar Omar. Throughout my childhood and now, she’s been supportive of my creative endeavors and passion for storytelling. Without her support and encouragement, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m very blessed to have such a great support system.
