We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Alves and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Determining the right moment to pivot or persevere in pursuit of one’s creative vision demands a nuanced approach. Such decisions are rarely straightforward, requiring careful evaluation of factors like goals, values, resources, and circumstances. Beginning with a close examination of our goals—both long-term aspirations and immediate objectives—we must ask ourselves: Do these goals still ignite our passion? Are they still relevant and attainable? In the dynamic realm of fashion design, where innovation and adaptation are paramount, this introspection lays the foundation for strategic decision-making. We, as creatives, stand at the intersection of passion and pragmatism, where our dreams intersect with the realities of our craft. Navigating this terrain requires not only intuition and resilience but also a keen sense of vision. Amidst the whirlwind of uncertainty, we must tap into our intuition, reignite our creative spirit, and fearlessly reimagine our path forward. It is within this tapestry of our journey that we discover the resilience to overcome challenges and the boundless potential of new beginnings.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As the Designer, Founder, and CEO of Ashley Alves Collection since 2016, my dedication to reshaping the luxury fashion landscape through sustainable practices and environmental consciousness is profound. Beyond merely crafting handbags, my mission is to infuse every aspect of my brand with a deep sense of purpose and responsibility. Through the meticulous upcycling of antique-vintage textiles and innovative materials like Piñatex ®, I not only reduce waste but also honor the rich history and cultural significance of each material. My belief in the interconnectedness of nature, art, and fashion acts as a guiding principle, compelling me to restore the delicate balance between humanity and our planet. My designs strive to weave narratives rooted in the Old World fibers and treasures, reminding consumers of the intrinsic value in sustainability and craftsmanship. Sustainability isn’t just a fleeting trend for me; it’s a moral imperative woven into every decision I make. My vision is to lead the charge toward a future where zero-waste practices pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. With each environmentally friendly handbag and accessory I create, I aim to redefine perceptions of fashion, offering a glimpse into a world where luxury and sustainability harmonize seamlessly.

However, the journey has been anything but easy. While sustainability now enjoys the spotlight, I have championed zero waste, vegan, and plant-based luxury long before it became fashionable. For over 13 years, I have dedicated myself to this cause, exploring these concepts even in my Master of Fine Arts thesis titled “Solar Evolution” at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011. This groundbreaking thesis delved into uncharted territories, exploring the integration of photovoltaic film and conductive threads into everyday apparel.

Throughout this journey, I have gained invaluable lessons in resilience, patience, and adaptability—essential components of success. Setbacks are inevitable on the path to achievement, yet it is through embodying these values that I navigate the challenges of delayed success with grace and determination. Continually evolving and expanding my knowledge, the future remains bright, filled with possibilities for further innovation and impact.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Indeed, I’d like to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to my mother, Rachel Rose. Her unwavering belief in my creative talents dates back to my earliest days when I was just a baby. What began as a flicker of faith has blossomed into an enduring flame of support and inspiration. Her continual motivation, unwavering support, and boundless encouragement have served as the fuel for every new challenge I undertake as a visionary and designer. Beyond nurturing the child I once was, she has been an unwavering source of strength and guidance, nurturing the woman I have become today. Regardless of the circumstances, her presence has been a constant beacon of love and support, guiding me through the highs and lows of my career. Attending every fashion show, art exhibition, and trade show event, she has stood faithfully by my side, sharing in my triumphs and supporting me through every setback. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have her unwavering love and support shaping my journey every step of the way. Her belief in me has been my greatest source of inspiration, and I am eternally grateful for her presence in my life.
