We had the good fortune of connecting with Asa William Lacourbier known formerly Asa Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asa, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I’m a serious person, if I want it bad enough, I’ll get it. I wake up early, write my goals down, exercise, and discipline myself to stay dedicated to my artwork. I’m also very determined, so if something isn’t working as I thought it would, I go back to the drawing board and try it again. Faith is critical as well as taking action.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is connected to personal experiences I’ve had, even though my earlier work was celebrity focused there was still a piece of me in the artwork that expressed my own individuality. Now I’m expanding and using new influences, pictures, and muses I see in my mind and I’m working hard to cultivate that. I’m heading to SAIC in the fall for college on a scholarship so I’m really excited about that. Consistency and my desire got me to where I am today. It’s never easy but if you want it you have to pursue it diligently. I’ve learned not to rely on people to see your vision and to just keep pushing through regardless of what they think. I want the world to know that art is important.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The High Museum is dope, I used to work there for a while. They always have something new going on. Go to the Old 4th Ward Skatepark, they always have cool interesting characters out there. Cuts Steakhouse downtown has some good lamb chops check them out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to acknowledge this interview to Richard Thomas, Ted Ellis, Lana Ensmann, Winston Westley, Jarrod Barnes, Ronald Scott, God, my mother, and my brother.
