We had the good fortune of connecting with Arthur Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arthur, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued this career based on the fulfillment received in each project. I would be lying if I said, I never thought I would be in this position because something always told me I would. It’s an inner voice that inspires me to continue evolving from within in order to give the best version of myself to the craft. I went from sketching characters for fun to operating a business with this gift that creates opportunities each day. The business involves commissions for my clients, the shop to sell apparel, and now practicing tattooing to unlock another level of skills. After four years, I am still learning new techniques, business strategies, and importantly enjoying the experience of being an artist. It is satisfying to know I pour my soul into these pieces and I am truly honest with myself and people who love my artwork.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The art I create is for the soul because I want each piece to invite truth and righteousness. Inspire my audience to be themselves in this world while learning to be a better them. I know we are human, so we will make mistakes, but I believe it is the artist’s purpose to challenge the mind and waken the mind. I spent years perfecting my craft through self-teaching which has its challenges. I did not go to school for art, so I am always ecstatic to master a medium and the skill set always compliments another medium. I overcame the challenges by being a student and watching artist like Paper Frank, Lavan Wright, McFlyy, and others be successful with their unique styles. I have learned that patience is a virtue and my time will come as long as I remain consistent and determined. I want the world to know that Soul Outkast is always here to create hope in a this world even in its darkest times. Always inspire those who look to be a better them and may that bring more light to the world.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my family. The ones closest and dearest to my heart because they motivate and support me on my low and high days. I learn from all of them to help me in life and not just my art career because it makes me a better artist. I know God blessed me with these wonderful people and I could never take such a blessing for granted. My mama, pops, brothers, and my lady deserve their credit because they are a reason to live as well as be a better Arthur. I want them to know that I love them all dearly and every moment keeps me in the marathon.
