We had the good fortune of connecting with Arteria Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arteria, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk taking is one of the most fundamental elements in reaching success. You never really know what can happen until you put yourself out there. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t take risks. When I started my business I was struggling Financially. I only had enough money to purchase a sample for my products and product photos. However I took the risk of promoting my products online and on social media. I managed to earn money for my products through pre-orders. That gave me enough time to come up with the money I needed to pay my balance to receive my products. Between the pre-orders and my official business launch , I sold half of my inventory within the first few months. This taught me that things will work out in your favor when you take risks. You have to focus on what can go right instead of what will go wrong. I think we hold ourselves back when we avoid taking chances. As a woman I knew that other women could benefit from my product. I struggled a lot with my Self-esteem growing up. I’m sure other women did as well. When I found a solution to overcome that barrier, I knew other women would want to know how to do so as well. Creating a journal to help women feel confident about themselves was a great idea. If I would have allowed my finances to take over my plan , I would have never been able to launch my business. Not only would I have let my dream die but I would have missed out on the opportunity to help women empower themselves. My story is a living proof of how important It is to be confident in yourself. I believe that is the foundation of why my business is doing so well.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a child I was always into Art. I enjoyed acting, fashion , dancing and being apart of anything that allowed me to express myself. As I got older I got discouraged and started straying away from my talents to focus on providing for myself. Once I strayed away from my Art I became depressed and angry. I had no idea that was the cause of it at first. It wasn’t until I found myself at my lowest point where I started to write poetry and that’s when I realized what was missing from my life all along. I can’t say that this journey is easy because it wasn’t easy at all. Being a creative is tough because you do not see money right away . When you have to support yourself it’s easy to let it slip from you. Especially when people tell you that your dreams can’t pay the bills. I had to learn that we live in a time where the opportunities are endless. There are ways to make it as a creative. You just have to believe and focus on your love for your Art. That will bring you everything you need. My brand is a living proof of how beautiful Art can be. I named my brand Tears Of Art because I turned all of my pain into something beautiful. I also realized that the better version of me is when I express myself through my Art, rather than anger. I wanted to re-invent myself so , I , Arteria broke down my name and turned it into something creative. Tears Of Art spells out my name in a different way. This represents how my life changed when I rekindled with my talents. The only letter that is missing from my name in my brand name is the letter “ I “ because I am Tears Of Art.
I realized that we all go through things in life and as artist we are bold enough to share our stories in a way that is beautiful enough for people to want to listen.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I enjoy going to places that has a nice view followed by a relaxed , calm vibe. I enjoy going to the rooftop bar in Asbury Park. Poetry slams are also my go to. Being by the water is also refreshing for me so I would also recommend the Marine in Belmar for dinner, which has nice food and a great view. I think some of the best places to be is being surrounded by water or nice views. It feels calm and intimate , which is what I thrive for. When I’m in the mood to be adventurous I prefer to go hiking in the trails . I would go to Point Pleasant or Seaside beach where I can play arcade games ,get on rides and lay on the beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My College Professor , Tina Crafton played a major part in how I got started. I was a student in her “ Child Adolescence” course. This course was designed for us to interpret how a child upbringing affects their behaviors and emotions in adulthood . This class inspired me to study the importance of Mental Health . Not only did I learn about the trauma that lived within others but I learned what trauma lived within me. At the end of her course I started working to overcome my childhood trauma and I discovered that I wanted to help others do the same. A year later after I graduated is when I launched my brand ,which is centered around mental health. Professor Crafton helped me find my purpose in her class. She also encouraged me along the way when I struggle to believe in myself. I will always be thankful for her.
