We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariana Heinzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ariana, how do you think about risk?
Risk is the special sauce! I sprinkle in risks throughout my life and career to keep me excited. I don’t want things to be predictable. I have to remind myself that when I get insecure or something doesn’t go well. I don’t want it to be easy, I want to grow and that means taking risks. That being said, If I’m going to take a big risk it has to be something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m not a spontaneous risk taker.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, I’m just proud to be figuring it out. I’m proud to be making things with my hands and I’m proud it brings people joy. And I’m excited that there’s so many different things I want to make and so many things I want to learn. It’s hard to keep that energy and curiosity going though. It helps to not take things too seriously and to take a step back every once in awhile and revel in the joy of it all. Perhaps that’s what my work is about at it’s core: I’m excited to be here and I urgently make vases and planters and sculptures and draw all over them because that’s how I express it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Every studio I’ve had has been out of the generosity of others. People at every stage of my business have made space for me to work in clay. Whether it be taking over my family’s kitchen table, my parents basement a friends spare room, a neighbor’s barn, There has always been people in my life who have been willing, excited even to encourage my practice. Which is mind blowing because I can make a real mess in a studio.
