We had the good fortune of connecting with Areatae McGhee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Areatae, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over time, I’ve learned to blend my passions with my responsibilities, creating a harmony between work and life. I see balance as energy—constantly adjusting but always prioritizing what’s truly important: my family and my entrepreneurial spirit. It’s about making every moment count, both professionally and personally.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My journey to where I am today is a story of commitment, effort, consistency, and faith. It began with a decision to enroll in community college, driven by a young woman’s desire to achieve more for herself. Each year brought its challenges, but also strengthened my resolve. Connecting with peers who shared similar backgrounds and aspirations reminded me why I pursued my dreams: “Why not me?” This mantra fueled my determination.

Balancing full-time studies, work, community service, and personal sacrifices was tough, but necessary to forge a competitive edge and carve out a new future. Life’s unexpected twists occasionally disrupted my plans, yet I never lost sight of my goals. Throughout this journey, the unwavering support from friends and family has been invaluable, helping me reach my professional achievements. Their support, combined with my relentless pursuit of my dreams, shaped the path to where I stand today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If my best friend comes to visit, I’d take her to Lincoln City beach to soak in the stunning ocean views. We’d enjoy some Southern cuisine at Screen Door and then visit Matador Restaurant for a taste of their specialties. It would be a fantastic weekend filled with fun and laughter.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My older cousin, Derrell Sekou Soumah Walker, has been a profound source of inspiration and support in my life. Witnessing his dedication as he built his business from scratch—whether working alongside him or cheering him on—has been truly uplifting. He has always been an incredible mentor, constantly encouraging me to follow my dreams with passion. Now, seeing him thrive with his own dance company, Sebe’ Kan, West African Dance Company I am reminded of what an amazing and disciplined man he is. His commitment, effort, and consistency are not just building a business, but a legacy of character.
