We had the good fortune of connecting with April Williamson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Other than working myself, the most important decision I’ve made that is contributing to my success was my commitment to my spiritual growth. Once I whole heartedly understood that God is ALWAYS in control it was easy to release the fear of failure, fear of having to overwork myself, releasing the pressures of society. What’s for me is for me and only my ori can change that.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is…….. art. I stay in my lane and I am my own competition. What separates me from most artist is that although I appreciate the works of other artist and support them, I don’t consume myself with what others have going on, my journey is mine and I can’t enjoy mine worried bout someone else’s. Hard work and consistency got me where I am professionally. There is so much more on my check off list to do but the connections I’ve made in the city and my persistence will keep me here. It was not easy, after I had my sun it was a challenge finding balance and then turning art into a business was a whole nother thing lol. Also coming from a dancer to a full time artists it’s been slightly difficult for some to see me as an artist and the cash flow is an adjustment. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to celebrate others! You don’t lose anything by supporting others in your profession. I want the world to know that I am Apryl Katrina an artist born in Quincy to, atlanta native for 12years and my brand is everything love. An exploration of African traditional practices Ifa, and a collaboration of mediums to bring the elders and the children together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok so everyone knows Magic City is the first stop I’m making, day or night! The hookah is A1, the food is 5star, the women are beautiful and the drinks are strong.. after we grab food at magic we gon head over to Lomi for an early grown folks turn up. I’m not outside often but if we hungry after we will grab a bite from MGK or Bamba depending on the mood. Lions will be the final stop of the night! Honestly one of the best hookahs in town! Again I don’t go out much unless I’m with my sun and we enjoy Pullman yards and piedmont park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people pour into me that I would take up the entire interview covering them but the credit and the recognition always goes to Ifa. Thank you Orisha, thank you spirit guides, thank you Baba Chief Ajerikin, thank you to the members of ile Esan, thank you to the ancestors, thank you Olodumare! Ifa is the master of today, the master of tomorrow, and the master of the day after tomorrow.
