We had the good fortune of connecting with April Terry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is seeing beauty in any and everything and capturing that for the client, the world, and myself. I thank God for the gifts that he has blessed me with, because babeee, all glory to Him! I’m not the type of photographer to set you up in front of the background and pose you. We will be having conversations about your life and we both will be moving around. “If it feels awkward it looks great on camera, don’t worry.” That is one of my statements, along with “candid moments are the best moments.” Taking the family photo shouldn’t be a drag for everyone involved. lol Let me see you, and I will show you, you. I am most excited when I see the joy in my client’s face after seeing just the back of my camera and I’m the most proud when I get the family holiday cards in the mail from my clients! The family holiday cards make me feel like I am apart of their family too! I save them all!
I got to where I am today professionally just by doing the work. As in going to the city hall, paying my taxes, going to revenue classes to learn how to run my business, being audited, and to this day I still feel like I need to be better businesswise but also in my craft. It is a whole other THING to run a photography business! I went to school for Justice and Public Safety/Paralegal so not a lot of business running was taught! Never be ashamed to reach out to others in a different experience level for guidance. To this day I am asking questions and seeking guidance from other trust worthy professionals. So in retrospect it wasn’t easy for me, but hey, someone else may love that side as well as the art side. Bless them that have that drive! haha The challenges are overcome just by putting one foot in front of the other, asking the questions to the right people, get the answer, and put in the action. There’s no need to make things harder than they need to be.

Some lessons I have learned have ranged from making sure to keep track of receipts, because the IRS is real; and to make sure you check if people are ashy or not lol. I want people to know that my photography brand is film-like if not actual film and I want them to take a deep breathe, breathe, and lets get some cool shots. These moments can last forever on film.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I can’t give you a whole itinerary because we will be winging it! lol No need for all the planning. Tomorrow isn’t promised.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course! My parents, husband, and friends for sure saw my potential before I did. I just loved to photograph the pretty things that I saw in my daily life, whether that be the flowers in my mom’s garden or people. When you take a picture they are forever captured in still life, a visual memory for anyone to see, and possibly someone can be inspired!
