We had the good fortune of connecting with Anyea Anderson, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anyea, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Back in 2018 I hosted a class for Ladies Who Brunch Atlanta conference based on how your emotional and mental wellbeing could interfere with your brand, because ultimately your brand starts with you! Well before the the event one of the coordinators sent me a message in December 2017, said that my title was not “catchy” enough, and I would need to come up with something that would make people want to sign up for my class. She advised me to come up with something that was fun and not so “Mental Health.” I was confused and stuck because my class was very much mental health. So I went to thinking and changed the name from How to effectively cope with your feelings and emotions while building your brand to Funds over Feelings. I was excited that was catchy right, wrong I had to come up with a name other than Anderson Consulting and Counseling Services as well. Yeah you guessed it that was not “catchy” enough either. So I went on another brain storm and I could not think of anything. But this one night I was randomly thinking of names in the shower and it came to me POPNTALK, like Pop-up-shop, but you Pop-up and talk. So basically #PONPNTALK is just that I pop-up or you pop-up and we talk about it POPNTALK!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a therapist yes but I also sell products on my website www.popntalk.com. I have a self-help book, The Glow Up Recovery Plan, that encourages individuals to pour back into them selves and has various exercises to help you Glow through situations in life! I also have #POPNTALK: Lets Talk About It! which is a 101 deck of cards that encourages positive communication amongst women in their friend circle, the questions boarder sex, relationships, career, finances, religion, life choices, and so much more! These are products you can use on your own, outside of a therapy session. Because the real work happens outside of session, when your back a lone with your thoughts or when your with your friends and/or family. Building my brand was by no way easy, it was days I did not even know how I would make my ideas a reality, let alone ends meet. But I kept going and used some of my own advice and broke my goals down into steps. I tried not to concentrate on getting the big goal done and only concentrated on one step at a time. For instance when I was creating my card game I contacted the graphic person first, asked what specifics she would need from me to deliver. Then I researched distributors contacted them and asked them what exactly they would need to produce my product, then I started creating questions. I started the process in late 2018, my card game was not finished until May 2020, and it was not available for sale until September 2020. Through that process alone I learned to work on my own timeline not anyone else and to water my own grass and watch it grow! I would like the world to know that #POPNTALK is a safe space where people can get together and discuss how their personal and professional life affects their mental and emotional well being. I want people to be able to purchase #Popntalk products to help them create an environment where they can discuss real life issues in fun way and promote positive communication! And to watch out because #THEPOPNTALKTHERAPIST just might pop up in a city near you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly it depends on the person but I do have my got to spots; Gotcha’s Breakfast Bar, Baltimore Seafood Company (All their restaurants), Mezcalito’s, Ray’s on The river, The Jamesroom, Ladybird, The Beltline, Little Five Points, Pour Taproom, and Bad axe Throwing, Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my mother Amy Dean, my father Floyd Anderson Sr because of them I am a live and my village (brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, people who have purchased, posted, told somebody about my products, picked up the phone and just talked to me, the people who text back lol) I also want to thank my Aunt Rev. Jamilah Abdul-Raheem (Ummi) she laid the foundation for me to be able to pursue higher education.
