We had the good fortune of connecting with Anu Da Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anu, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up in a small town, Morgan City, Louisiana. There were less than five grocery stores in town when i was coming up, so i had to find creative ways to get new things. I would go outside of my grandmother’s home with a milk crate and lay out all of my old toys to sell and trade with the neighborhood kids. I’ve always had a niche for sales, and i figured, why not start a business with a purpose and use my talent to create a source of income.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally? What sets you apart from others?
What keeps me busy is bringing all of my ideas to life through blogging and my podcast “Anu Perspektive”, which is available on my website.

What sets me apart is my identity. Who I am as an artist is incomparable. I have the versatility of Andre 3000, who I am most inspired by. A lot of artists appeal to the people to gain popularity, but I’ve gotten this far by being myself.

I started creating music at the young age of 7. I wrote my first song on a piece of construction paper. Fast forward to when I was 18 years old, i began going to Area 51 studios in Lafayette, LA. I was creating with a producer named J Trax while I was attending The University of Louisiana at Lafayette at the time. (fun fact: i interviewd New Cupid, singer of “Cupid Shuffle” while i was attending ULL)

Unfortunately, I dropped out. I could not focus, i was not motivated at all.

In 2015, by the grace of God, i was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which explained my struggles. After my diagnosis, i was in denial, but after a few years, I was able to accept it.
IT WAS NOT EASY.

During my time of acceptance, around 2017, I took my son to get his hair cut and met a guy named Que. He knew a guy named Dj Kelaux, and once we met, we’ve been creating music since!

I was able to overcome my obstacles by focusing on my art, friends, and family. God plays such a huge role in my life, He blessed me with these gifts, so i’ve made it my purpose to bless others. I want to raise awareness about bipolar disorder, and help others understand that they are not alone! You can definitely chase your dreams with a mental illness. Won’t be easy, but you can do it.

My brand’s mission is to spread love & self acceptance. Distribute art that is good for your soul and sets a great tone for your vibe. Da Pekuliar Onez is my record label and it is a safe space for the weirdos, like myself.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would love to give my mother her flowers, because she trained me to become who i am today. From winning talent shows, pageants, & many other competitions, my mother never held me back. Secondly, my producer Keenan Thomas aka Dj Kelaux. He has taught me so much about the music industry. My label mates, Kyanté and Angel The Don. They work so hard and we all promote one another. The love is real! Huge shout out to Michelle Adams of M.Adams films! She is a filmmaker and she loved my track “Maybe” enough to put it in her film’s soundtrack. The movie is entitled “Prisoner of Love” and is executively produced by Omar Gooding. It is going to be such a great watch, it will be releasing very soon. So stay tuned!

Lastly, yet most importantly, my husband, Damion, and our 3 children. Words cannot express my love, but my songs can.
