We had the good fortune of connecting with Antwon Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antwon, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
At times throughout my childhood, I would hear my elders teach us children that the only way to success was to pick a job or career and stick with that for as long as possible. Life is an adventure and passions grow and die while new ones are birthed on the way: I’ve learned that it’s actually okay to explore many different avenues and success is dependent on you not giving up rather that the conventional advice of playing it safe wherever you’re comfortable.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hair care has always been apart of my story. For as long as I can remember, I was always drawn to the art that was hairstyling and my eyes were never far from watching the process of braids being completed or quick weaves installed. I can remember knowing how to braid at the young age of 8 and it was just something that was apart of me. I began working as a hairstylist at the young age of 15, which led to a local salon owner requesting to mentor me. She taught me that strength, persistence, and creativity would take me far in this industry. As a black male interested in becoming a hairstylist, of course I faced challenges with those who didn’t understand my vision. But I have always been sure of the desire that God has placed on my heart since a child, and I am certain that hair is for me to this day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If there was anyone first deserving of a shout out, it would have to be my mother, Tosha Patterson. Not only was she my first ever official client, but she pushed me in every way possible, teaching me along the way that perseverance is a necessity as a service provider and that limitations are not my portion. If I wanted a part in this industry, my mom was the first to let me know that fear is only a component that would hold me back: she dared me to be bold and always strive for growth, no matter how uncomfortable.
