We had the good fortune of connecting with Anoop Surya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anoop, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I have had to make is pursuing a full-time career as an actor. I came to the U.S to pursue bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. And I was very good at it and could probably have made a profitable career out of it. But my passion and happiness were in acting and in becoming a film/TV actor. In India and in my family, there’s usually no support for arts or acting and film because it’s looked down upon as a wasteful thing to do. So, I reached a point in life where I could become a job-hating mechanical engineer or a passionate, motivated actor. I had to trust myself to be successful in acting despite the setbacks, the low pay at times, the rejections, and the competition. So, at 19 years old, I changed my major to Theatre and started training to be a working actor without any plan B. And I’ve never looked back since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am an ACTOR. I love saying that, I love being that and I love everything about my craft. I’m excited to be this storyteller who creates memorable characters/impressions that inspires generations to come. I grew up in a passionately movie-going family. It was natural that I’d be inspired by the performances and be emotionally touched by them. As I got older, I wanted to have this ability to leave this mark in people’s minds. To inspire them, to influence their lives in a positive way through my craft. My craft is and always will a service to the masses. I’m unique because I’m me and there’s only one me in the world right now. If the audience loves my performances, I’m happy to have created my characters/films for them. I am meticulous in crafting my characters, doing the right amount of research for a role, and embodying the characters in a very realistic way. I do my best to train every day to achieve this. After all the research and practice, I just let myself shine through the character and there’s the magic!

Professionally, it has been a hurdle-filled adventure to be an actor. Trying my best every day to lead a discipled lifestyle is what helps me combat and overcome those hurdles. There might be a lot of things going on around me and in my personal life, but with the right amount of discipline and hard-work, I’ve been able to refocus, realign and stay calm in the toughest situations.

I want to leave the world a better place than it was, when I was brought into it. I want my performances/films to reach every corner of the world and bring all the joy, happiness and inspiration to the people who watch them, for decades to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is a thrilling city and there’s a lot to do. I would probably go visit the zoo, the coke factory, and the aquarium one day. A day would be spent at the Phipps Mall or Lenox Mall, with shopping, dining, and movies, one of the days would be spent watching a show at the Alliance Theatre and at one of the many parks. I would probably end up at one of the many clubs downtown or in Buckhead, over the weekend.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I’m ever grateful for the love and support of my parents, my professors, my friends, and my agent. My biggest shoutout goes to my parents and their belief in me. Although it was rocky start in them supporting my career, they quickly turned around and have been very supportive ever since. I would like to thank my theatre professors, David, Amy, Karen, and Johnna Doty, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville who thought me everything I know about my craft. I’m very thankful to all the professionals in my industry, may it be the producers, the directors, my fellow cast, and crew, who have all taken a chance on me and allowed me the opportunity to grow as an actor. A huge shoutout goes to my agent Susan Walters, of STW Talent Agency, who signed me very early on and trusted me to be a successful, working actor. And a lot of credit goes to my dear friends who have taught me life lessons, helped me grow and have kept me grounded.
