We had the good fortune of connecting with Annette Mia Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annette Mia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Our media company, Mercury Road Media and brand High Herstory have supported social equity reform and justice since our inception in 2017. We contribute to a number of organizations such as “No Prisoner Left Behind”, “National Bailout”, and are monthly contributors to Broccoli Mag’s “Floret Coalition”, an anti-racist collective of small businesses in the cannabis and cannabis-adjacent space supporting and funding equity-oriented actions via monthly donations and social campaigns. We are also very proud of the fact that we’ve been able to partner with New Orleans’ Youth Empowerment Program (Y.E.P.) to hire animators and illustrators for our show, High Herstory, which will premiere April 20th of this year on The Social Club TV.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out as an actor and met the co-founders of my company, Mercury Road Media, in a small college town in Texas. We all were studying acting and working at a Chinese food restaurant. After college, I moved to New York with my business partner, Jenny Joslin and we started creating viral videos for the internet which led to a YouTube residency. When we were ready to start creating short films, we enlisted our other business partner, Kendall Watkins and began making movies. We officially started our company in 2017 and began working with clients both in the cannabis industry and outside of it to create content that centered around feminism and cannabis. Our goal was to integrate our knowledge of filmmaking with cannabis branding and marketing. From there we created the first live action cannabis commercial to play on a billboard in Times Square for our client, My Bud Vase. Now, we are premiering the first season of our TV series, High Herstory, to an audience of millions via The Social Club TV. The show features womxm consuming cannabis and telling little known stories from women’s history, which makes up only .5% of the historical dialogue.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout to our Publicist, Sarah ElSayed, her enthusiasm and work in the cannabis space has truly made our business more streamlined and her company Grass is Greener PR, is innovative and very socially aware of how our industry needs to push for social justice.
