We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Lea Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna Lea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a freelance illustrator, my livelihood relies on people having the means and desire to hire artists. Nowadays everyone’s all about finding the fastest, cheapest, easiest way to get stuff done, and because of this opting towards AI generated illustrations instead of going for a human touch. While I understand not everyone can shell out for an artist, I do believe in fighting against the unethical use of Ai in the design space. That being said, the thought process behind starting my design business is simple: to foster a renewed appreciation for the unique craftsmanship of hand-drawn illustrations, made by real people, for real people.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now, I’m working on illustrating Kim Chesney’s upcoming children’s book, A Mysterious Night in the Library. I’m also designing some merchandise for a couple small businesses, and just wrapping up a wedding poster and sticker project.
I’ve also been lucky enough to be a part of the Floral Park Market family where I get to work with flowers, fresh local produce, and meet lots of cool people. If I’m not working on my freelance projects, you can probably find me at the market playing with the shop cat, Bertie!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to plan an itinerary full of Atlanta Must-Do’s, it would have to start out with grabbing some coffee at Chatahoochie Coffee Company on the river. Then a little shopping in the Westside, starting at Floral Park Market to grab some fresh flowers and of course to say hi to the shop cat, Bertie! Afterward some dinner at Agave in Cabbagetown, and then going next door to Carroll Street Cafe for some cake and wine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I am surrounded by the most supportive friends and family a girl could ask for, the person who has helped me shape my career the most is my boyfriend, Willem. Not only is he an incredible illustrator himself, but the most hardworking man you will ever meet. I wouldn’t be able to navigate the freelance world if it wasn’t for his love, support, and continued guidance.
