We had the good fortune of connecting with Ann Danner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ann, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Iced And Topped Bakery Shoppe was to create a unique experience that you couldn’t find anywhere else. I also had to have good old fashioned desserts that would take people back to grandma’s homemade goodies. It was important to me to have variety and make even the adults feel like kids in a candy store. Our taste of Paris experience brings a bit of joy to all who enter.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We own an investment and branding firm of 17 dotcoms and one brick and mortar which gave us the tools to give Iced And Topped Bakery Shoppe a unique feel. Because of this we came with the tools to market, create promos and commercials, develop websites and apps and so much more. We love “business” and everything that comes with it.
Initially I started Iced And Topped working alone. August of 2021 my husband stepped out of bed to get dressed for work and broke his foot in three places. He had to then get a metal plate and screws in his foot. We had to quickly rethink our strategy and being the fighter that he was he bounced back and began to assist full time in the bakery. All of a sudden things changed, the numbers grew, and sales went through the roof.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For those visiting the area I would first bring them to our plaza of course. But not just to our bakery. I would show them a piece of history there as the majority of the shoppes are owned by women of color. I would take them on a food truck journey starting with Cleveland’s Concessions our fav food truck. We love food trucks and find the most authentic people there. We would tour restaurants with authentic cultural cuisine. And of course one of my favs is furniture shopping on furniture row on Hwy 85.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We are a retired military family with nineteen grand children. Iced And Topped was branded for them. Legacy means so much and when they walk through the doors they know this belongs to them. The skills they take away from this are priceless no matter what area of expertise they choose. There is love here and the customers feel it and we owe it all to them.
