We had the good fortune of connecting with Anitra Terrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

When I started Reflektion Design, my main motivation was to share my passion for African art and culture with others. I wanted to create a platform where I could showcase the beauty and diversity of African art and educate people about its importance and relevance.

Additionally, I strongly believe that the items we choose to decorate our homes with should reflect our identity, values, and heritage. I wanted to create a business that offered unique and authentic African home decor that not only beautifies a space but also tells a story.

The thought process behind starting my business involved a lot of research and planning. I spent a significant amount of time understanding the market, identifying my target audience, and developing a business model that aligned with my values and goals.

It was important to me to create a business that was ethical, sustainable, and supported local artisans and small businesses in Africa. I also wanted to ensure that my business had a positive impact on the communities that I sourced my products from.

Starting a business can be challenging, but I was driven by my passion and the desire to create something that I truly believed in. My thought process was focused on creating a business that would not only be successful but also make a positive difference in the world.

What should our readers know about your business?
Reflektion Design is an Afro modern lifestyle brand for people who love cultural, heirloom quality decor with heritage and story. I work directly with artisans in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda to produce an assortment of handmade wall art, tableware, throw pillows, jewelry, baskets and more.

Reflektion Design is known for celebrating/creating an Afro modern aesthetic. An emphasis on paying homage to the various artistic traditions throughout Africa while using a discerning curator’s eye for modern patterns sets us apart.

I am passionate about offering products that help customers create a home that feels collected, not decorated. A home that makes you feel powerful and grounded because it reflects who you are. The company mantra is, See Yourself at Home which guides the design direction for the business.

Recently, I launched a collection of baskets on HSN.com which I’m very proud of.

I am grateful for the amount of notable press Reflektion Design has received. Being featured in HGTV, Better Homes & Gardens, Essence Magazine, Architectural Digest and others reminds me of how far I’ve come and how much what I do resonates.

I’m also excited to announce that I’m in the process of developing a YouTube interview series called How We Live based on my blog which celebrates the lives and homes of people across the African diaspora. Viewers will be taken inside the homes be inspired and learn tips about decorating their home through the interviews.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends visit Atlanta I like to show them a nice mix of what the city has to offer which includes: food, art and nature.

Food: Chattahoochee Food Works is a food hall that features a variety of vendors offering delicious food options. From tacos to Korean fried chicken to vegan pizza, there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is lively and the food is top-notch, making it a great spot to take visitors. Chattahoochee food works is one of my favorite eateries because there’s so many food options in one place which is great when you have out of town guests.

Art: I also enjoy taking friends to the High Museum of Art. The museum features a diverse collection of art from around the world, ranging from classic to contemporary. One Friday a month, the museum hosts High Frequency Fridays, which is a series of events that includes live music, drinks, and interactive art experiences. It’s a great way to experience the museum in a fun and unique way.

Nature: Amicalola Falls is always top of my list because it’s beautiful and an opportunity to get outside and exercise. Located about an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Amicalola Falls is the tallest waterfall in Georgia and is surrounded by beautiful forest scenery. Hiking up to the top of the waterfall is a fun challenge but walking the trails is equally enjoyable.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to several black interior designers who played a significant role in the success of my business early on. These designers, Beth Diana Smith, Saudah Saleem, Angela Belt, and Jeanine Hayes, featured my products in their client projects which resulted in major press from publications such as HGTV, Better Homes & Gardens, and Architectural Digest.

Their support and recognition of my products were instrumental in building brand awareness and attracting new customers to my business. It is important to acknowledge and support the work of black interior designers who have not always received the same level of recognition and opportunities as their white counterparts in the industry.

I am grateful for their support and hope to continue to collaborate with and uplift black interior designers in the future.
