We had the good fortune of connecting with Anisa & Casey Darnell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anisa & Casey, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As Yoda says, “Try? There is no try, only do” – We’ve learned and now believe there is no balance. Like watching someone on a tight rope who is adjusting constantly…it is a journey of constant give and take. For us, life moves at the speed of unpredictability making “balance” feel like a fruitless endeavor.
We build our legos by the rules and about the time we put the crowning brick on, a toddler trips and crushes our plans. Okay enough analogies.
There are however, core values we all decide to protect or we don’t.
Values that govern our decisions & support our bigger purpose in any given season.
So, for work life, when we are with a client we are fully present and engaged and then when we are home with our 4 daughters, we shut work off. And of course work keeps calling & we could easily trade family time for pushing company success – but that wouldn’t serve the bigger purpose we adhere to – that family is the most important thing.
Any semblance of “balance” is really just discipline.
We used to work from home, but because we did not have a private office, we were constantly distracted and interrupted. Our kids didn’t know when we were “in or out” of the office.
Now having an office, we go there to work and come home to be home.
So as we go and grow, our desire is to continue the discipline of protecting this separation – seeing our work as a support system for our family – not trading our family for more work.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our Interior design firm is a collective of extremely talented designers and creatives, helping home owners make confident design decisions that save them stress and time.
And while we aim for design that draws a client in, it’s our customer service experience that makes them tell their friends.
We create spaces for a family that meet THEIR needs, not ours.
Spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional and serve as the backdrop for their greatest memories in their home.
The dream of our company Truth & Co. began way back as a little girl… 7 or so… wanting to design a neighborhood. My favorite memories are doing home and neighborhood “street of dreams” tours with my parents. We were always an entrepreneurial family – and it just rubbed off I guess.
Casey & I, in our dating years would do the same kind of tours and our favorite was going through homes in Atlanta under construction to study floor plans.
We dreamed of doing this together all those years back – hard to believe now how fast it went and how far we’ve come.
But, the road to starting our company together was truly anything but easy.
Entrepreneurship is such a journey of what you think you can do and what you find out you will have to do for a while… there’s a reason so many companies sadly don’t survive that initial year.
Not to mention we got pregnant with our 4th daughter a few months after we started Truth and co.
But we stuck it out, cried and laughed a lot, hired amazing people after interviewing hundreds, and started turning a corner with delegation and “better” scaling decisions.
We are excited about our team. Our team approach of humble rockstars that serve client’s dreams and have fun doing it.
We really believe what we do matters in ways bigger than we can fully know right now.
Because in the end, the spaces you create are the backdrop of the memories you will make… and we exist to help families make them GREAT.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are HUGE Ford Fry fans… his restaurants are 100% the best. We go on tours of them for date nights… start at King & Duke, head to St. Cecilia and land at Marcel.
You can’t go wrong with ANY of them.
But that’s in Atlanta. The West Provision and Ponce City Market are fun and touring through homes and history are always a delight.
However, about 20 min north is our real stomping grounds of Roswell and Alpharetta.
These towns are the best for date destinations and families and history.
Bike riding along the river is a favorite and then heading to Canton st. for a stroll and dinner with friends. Our office is conveniently located on Canton st. so maybe we are biased.
There are a number of great breweries and coffee shops worth coming and staying a while.
Valor coffee, Gate city, Variant and Fellows to name a few.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We have been massively encouraged and supported by Bryan and Shannon Miles – owners of Belay Solutions. They have invested time and wisdom we could never repay. Additionally we have a team-member, Taylor Linder, who has shouldered so much of the ever-shifting growing pains that come with a growing company. She has been a rock and we are grateful to say the least.
