We had the good fortune of connecting with Angie Patterson Muto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angie, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
It never really occurred to me to give up. I think I always knew that this would be a career without any guarantees, and that I’d just have to keep going. When I graduated high school, my parents really wanted me to have a backup plan (rightfully so). But I didn’t want to give myself anything to fall back on.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When people find out I’m an actor, the question is almost always, “Do you do movies, TV, or commercials?” I think people assume we pick a path to go down, and then choose what projects we do. But really, especially in the beginning of your career, you gotta take what you can get! I’ve worked on all of those, as well as plays; some big projects, some small, some big roles, and some very tiny roles. This career really is a marathon, and all of those jobs add up to my career so far. I would say the project I’m most proud of is American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson. I played OJ’s girlfriend in the first episode. I’ve been the lead in a couple movies, but this smaller role was so special because I got to work with actors I’d been watching since I was a kid: John Travolta, David Schwimmer, and Cuba Gooding, Jr., and we actually got to shoot it in Robert Kardashian’s house where it all went down.
I think what sets me apart from other actors is that I really am in this career for the long haul; I’ve never seen myself doing anything other than acting; YET it’s not the only thing in my world. I believe that living life outside of your acting career is essential in so many ways, and that is what’s helped me persevere for so long. I try to keep my life full with other things, too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I moved to Atlanta from LA about 3 years ago, so I still have a lot of exploring to do. But so far, I’ve loved shopping the independent vendors at Ponce City Market. Piedmont Park is pretty incredible. Most importantly: Best Pizza I’ve had is O4W, and Best Coffee is Brash near Westside Provisions. Outside the city, my favorite thing to do is visit waterfalls like the ones at Tallulah Gorge State Park. Georgia has incredible State Parks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As any actor knows, the artist life is all about ups and downs… I’ve been lucky to have people around me during the down times that helped keep me going, and understood where I was at – my family, husband, friends, and fellow actors. And of course the people who hired me for flexible day jobs! Lastly, anyone who ever told me when I was a kid that I should be an actor… those little ideas and words of encouragement can really make an impact.
