We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Thomas-Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been a dreamer, and I love to think outside of the box. Naturally, I’m a creative thinker, and my imagination has no limits. As a event designer, I’m happy to be able to share my dreams with the World as a career!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our company Birthday Sugar specializes in upscale event design, and event rentals. Our brand is most known for our “over the top” kids parties and baby showers. As a company, we are most proud of being able to successfully branch out and create three separate subsidiaries. Which are Birthday Sugar: Bridal (specializing in wedding planning and design). Sugar Seats (luxury chair leasing company). And our newest addition Sugar Props (specialty prop rental company). I believe what sets us apart from others is the fact that we set the trends as opposed to following trends. In addition, we also created an internship program that teaches individuals to not only learn how to become an event designer but most importantly, we teach our interns how to operate and manage a business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a sucker for the art and live entertainment, so if there are any limited time only shows in the city, my friends and I are definitely in attendance. For instance we would go to a cirque du soleil performance, check out some one of kind exhibits, and hit up a fun dinner restaurant, like Sugar Factory, because I love all things “sugar” of course!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my husband Lavoris Garrett. He’s the father of our 3 children, and my “silent” business partner, we honestly could not have made it this far without his sacrifices, dedication, love and support.
