We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Baker-Creary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always been a little different from everyone else. While most of the world utilized the pandemic as a “break”, I noticed a huge void and went into overdrive trying to think of a way to uplift the spirits of those around me and re-instill a sense of optimism for the future. I had absolutely no idea how I would do this but I knew I was known for two things, my positive outlook and my fashion sense so I decided to start there. It was only right to name the brand something that would bring people together and inspire them to be more than they ever imagined, Mobillionairez, it was love at first sight the moment I sketched up the design.
Since I had a lot more free time on my hands I had been listening to a lot of podcasts, one in particular Sleep is For Suckers, so I knew I needed to head over to USPTO.gov to ensure the name was not taken. Thankfully it was not taken but there was a rapper that went by the name Mobillionaire and I
knew my brand would be so much more than clothing so I decided to trademark Mobillionairez Way, because we are more than a brand, we are a way of life.
Once I had my LLC filled that’s when the real fun began, I bumped my head so many times because I had no idea how hard it truly was running a clothing brand. You must take into account your target customer, what problem(s) are you solving for them, what type of fabric does the ideal customer want to feel against their skin, what type of designs do they do they like, what are their favorite colors, how much money are they willing to spend on their clothing, what do they like to do, where do they hang out? I know it sounds outlandish but if you want to be successful you must know and understand all of that type of information when it comes to your ideal customer aka your customer avatar.
I wanted to please everyone and when you come out wanting to please everyone you wind up running around in circles. If you are your ideal customer start there, for example I am my ideal customer. I’m a go-getter, but I’m no longer the type of go-getter that “Just Do It” works on, I’m still dealing with the trauma of losing my dad and career so some days I need to give myself a little Grace, so I may require a little more encouragement or reminding where I didn’t need that before, I love jumping fresh, I love matching my clothing with my shoes, I love motivational quotes and
messages, I want to be comfortable so I enjoy lose fitting clothing, I love graffiti so I don’t mind a lot of designs all over my clothing, I wear designer clothing so it has to have the same type of designer quality and feel and I don’t mind the cost as much.
Believe it or not you need to be that detailed because that separates your potential customers for you. If you have a busy design and you’re trying to market it to someone who is a minimalist, you’re targeting the wrong customer. Price also comes into play quite a bit as well because if you are marketing to customers who want $10 but your blanks are $10 then that won’t work either. But put the right message in front of the person who needs to hear it coupled with a dope design and you could be the one to change the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
One major attribute that makes my brand stand out from other street fashion brands, is that my brand’s designs focus more on promoting a specific message and/or philosophy that goes beyond just selling clothes. These life lessons either come from things I learned from my late father or biblical reminders that provide hope the hope the world needs to see & hear.
The road to get to where I am now has definitely been a windy road. When I started the brand in 2020 I had no idea I would wind up being the crash test dummy to find out if the “Definition” could really keep go•getters going. Well let me tell you, it really works. I went from being featured in movies and sold in stores to walking away from it all.
I lost my father in Mar 2021 and also stepped away from my military career at the same time, coupled with a whole string of losses that would have taken even the strongest of the strongest out. The very next year my mother was diagnosed with Cancer, due to all of this I stepped away from the brand from the year.
During this year, I wore one of my “Definition” shirts basically every day and every day I walked past that mirror reminding myself who I was looking at those words on my shirt until I started believing them again.
It was at that moment I knew I was on to something and that my daddy was still with me indeed, he was still with me in all of the principles he taught me, he taught me to play my hand, he taught me that a go•getter is always a go•getter, he taught me that when life gives me lemons that I need to make lemonade & now I’m ready to reshare those principles with the world.
So to me it’s more than about just putting a design on an outfit or the ability the sell, it’s about the ability to help someone see themselves on the other side of their situation. I want to show someone if I can “Shine in the Dark” so can you, you don’t have to just take what life gives you, “Make Lemonade” or be the “Definition” of someone who plays the hand they were dealt, and if nothing else, always “Believe in U”.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmmm….let’s see, there is so much culture tied to the A so this is a hard one. But if I had to chose I’ve say, Art of the Streets for sure I love graffiti. After taking in some of the dope graffiti pieces I would say hitting up a Hawks game would be a must. Hawks games have been known to bring the city out regardless of who they are playing is a show within itself, especially when Boosie Boo is in the building. After the game I would go and hit up Tip’s spot, Trap City Cafe for dinner because it is definitely a vibe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout is dedicated to my late Great Grandmother Mary “Mo” Eaves the first example I had of a go•getter, my late father Augustus Womack who taught me to always play my hand & when life gives me lemons, to make lemonade. To my mother Alfretta Womack the strongest woman I know, you beat Cancer with a smile, I never saw you give up ever regardless, you always made a way, thanks for always believing in me & showing me the way!
