We had the good fortune of connecting with andrew crawford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi andrew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a place where I could continue the work that I had begun at art school, (RISD) I found that there was a viable commercial application of the skills I was using to make sculpture.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artwork is very diverse. It ranges from non functional sculpture endeavors to functional and architectural metalwork to creative problem solving associated with non artistic projects. I am most proud of the fact that I have been able consistently grow as an artist, a business, and as an individual for more than 30 years. Because I love my work so much, it was often easy to succeed. However, there were challenges to overcome. I struggled to find a graceful dynamic between my staff and myself. I often focus so hard on the end product, I pay less attention to the atmosphere I am creating around myself. In addition, I have found the balance of what is expected, what is possible, and what is profitable to be extremely frustrating. (especially when we rarely make the same thing twice) I have learned to trust that we will finish our work on time. I have learned to lean on my staff and allow them to grow along with me, as opposed to under me. One of the most valuable realizations I have made is that I do not need to say “yes” to every project.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever I have a friend in the City, I take them to the West side. My first shop was at Howell Mill and 14th before all the buildings were there. Our favorites are Tuza, Ornesby’s, JCT, The Howell, and the Weiland. For drinks and food, we love the Bold Monk.
The Bellwood Quarry park is a great place to show off the City’s effort at greenspace. Live music is always a great addition to a visit. We love the Eastern, Terminal West, and the Variety Playhouse.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe most of success to my parents and my brothers. Ever since I was a young man, they have all believed in me and encouraged me to continue my path. In addition, they have supported me through opportunities, commissions, connections, and overwhelming kindness.
