Meet Andrea Vanderham | Owner of Human Canvas Barbershop

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Vanderham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision I made when going out on my own is taking the risk in having the courage to understand I had the wheelpower to make this work. 2nd was putting my head down and working as hard as possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I still have clients that I had 15 years ago when I started out. One said to me I thought you were nice And the conversation was good, but it took you an hour and a 1/2 to cut my hair. Now I can cut a head of hair in 15 minutes. It’s really about the people that believe in you and support you. I feel incredibly lucky to have gained that through this profession and get to use my creativity all at the same time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is full of history so I would take them them around to show them how we got to where we are today. Also I would take them around to show them the natural beauty of Georgia. We have some great hikes along with great views. Atlanta also has great rivers and Great Lakes.. There’s more than enough to keep company occupied in this great city of ours.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe every bit of my success to my clients. I always say my job is like having a 1000 mentors.. I cut men’s hair so they have taught me about business, grit, perseverance, good decision making. I still learn from my clients every day as we conversate and I cut the hair.
