We had the good fortune of connecting with Anais Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anais, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision I made I believe was my decision to homeschool my children. It was a decision that I made way back when I was in college, when I found who I knew I wanted to marry! Homeschooling can be difficult, especially when you don’t have a village, family help or financial help, but I believe that it was worth it. The reason why is because not only did it give me an opportunity to heal from a rather tumultuous abusive childhood, but my five children don’t have to experience the same things that I went through. Being home allowed me the chance to admit, process, and breathe through all of the five stages of grief that I went through to get where I am today. It was never at all easy; again, we do not have much help on this road, and no one to this day believes in us or our marriage or decisions. We are pretty lonely at times. However, in my eyes, it is better than becoming the traditional family that everyone else has molded themselves to be because we think differently than most. That in itself is a prize and a huge edge in not repeating the same generational curses.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been writing and drawing since I was a young child. I have always known that I would be doing something artistic related, even music. I can play the piano by ear, so I have been practicing that as well. I went to college for graphic design when I got out of high school, even though I did not have the capability to finish. I was going through a ton of things at home; my father had been molesting me from ages 12-17 and my mom had just found out around the time I was going to college. Unfortunately, she did not allow him to be incarcerated, so I had to endure him and his narcissism and abuse towards my mother, sister, and I for more years following. I could not concentrate at all, so I ended up wasting a lot of time and money trying to get my associates degree and failed out. I met my husband at that school and we dated the best way we could in the middle of my father barely allowing me to be a grown woman. I eventually had enough and my husband and I got married after 3 years. But my life didn’t get any better. We immediately started to have kids straight away, not thinking. I was very depressed for many years after escaping my parents and having 5 kids almost back to back. I wanted kids, but emotionally, I was not ready. It took me many years of healing through homeschooling, meditating, and basically doing self therapy with my husband and myself to heal many areas of my sexually damaged life, and I am grateful that I even made it through the worst parts of it when I never thought I would make it. All of these lessons about healing, self love, and just having some peace and quiet from the work world brought me through a few business failures, but has led me to getting serious about my music today. I was always on YouTube (Epic Realist TV), telling other women about my story and how I am healing, and I have quite a following from that. But I always wanted more. I am multitalented, and because I have so many children and homeschooling obligations, writing has been put on the back burner many times. Music, however, was something I can do now, given that I finally have the software and computer power to do so, which I now do. So now, I produce music digitally and it has been fun so far! I produce indie music as KaeOnyx, on all streaming platforms.
My music is made to heal people. I create instrumentals rather than music with lyrics because I want the sounds to speak for themselves however it witnesses to you. When I create music, my mind goes to another world, and I don’t want lyrics to get in the way of whatever you feel the song says to you. It has different effects on different people; one person will hear a song and they will imagine being in a dark forest, whereas someone else will imagine being on a beachside, sipping coconut water. It all depends, and instrumentals let you create whatever world comes to YOUR mind, not what I tell you to create. That is the fascinating part about instrumentals.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Interesting question, given that I’ve never had the opportunity to be on a vacation. LOL! But anyway, I would travel to an island, preferably Jamaica. Either that or the Dominican Republic, or Costa Rica. I am from Jamaica on my father’s side, and I resonate heavily with the culture. Islands are amazing. I am an islander at heart… I love the atmosphere, the people, the good times as it’s shown in media. I don’t even know where I would eat or hang out, because I have never been. I have not had the money to explore these things. Motherhood never stops. lol
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my wonderful husband. Without his love and patience, I would not be the happier and healed person that I am today. He is the only one that has been around for my successes and failures.
