We had the good fortune of connecting with Amisha Nair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amisha, what do you attribute your success to?
Mindset. It’s not a physical factor but it’s by far the most important one for me. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in comparison, imposter syndrome, financial issues, etc. The only reason I’ve been able to build my brand is because I shifted my mindset to be one that pushes myself without making myself feel awful in the process. Knowing that the reason I have support in my life isn’t because people just blindly support my work and I should start believing their praise in order to keep raising the bar in my own mind. I’ve learned that the minute you start feeling really really good about your work, the potential for it to snowball into success is extremely high.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The road so far wasn’t an easy one. Looking back on it though, I’m so glad it wasn’t. The creative world isn’t typically the one you’d find is dominated by South Asians, but I love being a part of the community I’ve built for myself. I’d always assumed that based on the school I was going to prior to moving to the United States, that there would be no outlet for my love for film and photography. I was happily incorrect. Even after having broken into the creative world, my new challenge was establishing my sense of style. It’s so easy to get influenced by the work of others and not feel very grounded in your own. Over the last couple of years, I’ve focused more on editorial shoots, playing around with colors, but I’ve noticed that red seems to be my trademark. I adore the idea of having one or two colors stand out from everything else in my photos. I also love incorporating cinematic tones into my shoots as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love my curated list I’ve made in this city that has slightly more niche (and some not so niche) things to do.
1. Barcelona Wine Bar – their tapas genuinely live rent free in my head.
2. Peachtree Farmer’s Market in Buckhead – supporting local businesses is always a must for me.
3. Fantasyland Records – one of the best record stores I’ve been to without a doubt.
4. Any of the themed nights at local clubs – MJQ and The District have some of my favorite themes for parties.
5. Bread & Butterfly – the cutest brunch spot for me in the state.
6. SCAD Fash Exhibit – I’ve loved every exhibit I’ve seen there.
7. East Pole Coffee Co. – they have a Chocolate Milk Drink… need I say more?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d probably be nowhere without my parents, who have supported my creative adventures since day one, especially being in an environment that didn’t quite help me fan the flame for my more artistic passions. It was truly so helpful to know that they would be reliable in this journey. My partner has also been my biggest supporter. He has, from the moment I met him, been my number one fan and his love and continued support has gotten me out of the worst of times more times than I can count. Whether it be helping acquire equipment, or simply matching my energy in ever part of my creative projects, he’s a constant source of inspiration and comfort.
