We had the good fortune of connecting with Amina Alvarez Barkane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is the one thing that has brought me to where I am today. When I was 16 I was offered to come to the United States to go to college and everyone told me that it was just too risky, but I came and that changed my whole life. I learned that the only thing that I regret is not taking more risks and letting people tell me that I just could not do it all.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I do I bunch of different stuff! To start with I work as a Researcher at Georgia Tech where I do COVID testing as well as numerous different experiments for different research projects. As well as that I am a master’s student, track and field athlete, and a signed model with agencies in Miami, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. It has definitely not been easy to juggle all of these very different careers, but I love it so much that I can make it happen! I have definitely learned that sometimes I will get so many no’s, especially with modeling and it can make you doubt if you are good enough to even try to achieve your dreams. Despite all the difficult times the only way you will achieve what you always wanted is to continue to work hard until you are where you want to be because it is not always easy, but it will always be worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them on a great hike at Stone Mountain in the morning to get a breath of fresh air, or maybe on a run through Piedmont Park. There is definitely so many trails that could give us the needed reset! For the afternoon I would go to Putshak at Midtown, the beltline, and ponce market with all its beautiful restaurants and rooftops. For the night, we would for sure go to Rock Steady or Jojo’s beloved for some nightlife experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends. Without their support and encouragement, I would not be where I am at today.
