Meet Amelia Santiago | Hair Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Santiago and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, every day, we know how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After spending a few years working regular jobs for other people, I realized that the traditional work structure wasn’t for me. I saw patterns in the workplace that didn’t align with the kind of freedom, creativity, or ownership I wanted in my life. That realization sparked a desire to work for myself and build something of my own.
Hair was already a natural fit. My mother has been a hairstylist for most of her life, so I grew up around the industry and picked up skills over the years just by being close to it. I knew I had a talent for it and more importantly, I knew it was something I could build a business around. So I decided to take that passion seriously. I enrolled in cosmetology school, completed the program in a year, and almost immediately after graduating, I opened my own salon. It was a bold step, but one that felt right. I turned a skill I loved into a business I could grow on my own terms.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is hair. But to me, it’s not just about styling it’s about transformation, care, and connection. I specialize in textured and natural hair, and what sets me apart is the attention I give not only to the final look, but to the health of the hair and the overall experience for each client. My goal has always been to create a space where people feel seen, heard, and cared for because how someone feels when they leave my chair is just as important as how they look.
Getting to where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every step. I started with a vision, a skillset I believed in, and the determination to build something of my own. I didn’t come from a salon background or a business degree I learned a lot through hands-on experience, trial and error, and staying committed even when things felt uncertain. There were times I doubted myself, but I kept going because I knew I had something valuable to offer.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of consistency and showing up with intention, even when things don’t go as planned. I’ve also learned the importance of setting boundaries, honoring my time, and trusting my gut especially as a business owner and creative.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that this isn’t just about hair. It’s about empowerment, confidence, and creating a culture of care. My salon is a space where people can relax, feel beautiful, and leave recharged. Every part of this journey from being inspired by my mom to opening my own doors has been rooted in love, integrity, and a belief in the beauty of growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d want to give them a perfect mix of relaxation, culture, good food, and a little bit of adventure. Here’s how I’d plan it:
Day 1: Welcome + Chill Vibes
We’d start off slow maybe brunch at a cozy, local café with great coffee and even better pastries. After catching up, we’d hit a cute boutique or two and then unwind with a sunset walk through a nearby park or along the water if the weather’s nice. Dinner would be somewhere vibey but lowkey good cocktails, soft lighting, and soulful music.
Day 2: Self-Care + Salon Day
Of course, I’d bring them to my salon for a full glam session! Whether it’s a silk press, a protective style, or just a scalp treatment, we’d make it a whole self-care experience. Afterwards, we’d grab smoothies or lunch from a healthy spot, then maybe hit up a local museum or gallery for some inspiration.
Day 3: City Energy
Time to explore! We’d head to some of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods think food trucks, murals, pop-up shops, and cool hidden gems. For dinner, we’d go all out at one of the best restaurants in town somewhere with a rooftop or a live DJ for a little nightlife energy.
Day 4: Nature + Grounding
Midweek is perfect for getting grounded. A quick road trip or hike at a scenic spot, followed by a picnic or a visit to a plant nursery or botanical garden. Something peaceful and grounding. That evening, we’d keep it chill maybe a wine night at home or a local poetry reading/open mic.
Day 5: Shopping + Creative Fun
We’d check out a local market, some vintage shops, or a Black-owned business collective for unique finds. Then maybe do something creative like a paint-and-sip, candle-making class, or even a dance class something fun and different. Dinner would be street tacos or a comfort food spot with big flavor.
Day 6: Night Out
After a relaxed morning and maybe brunch with friends, we’d get dressed up and go out for the night live music, a cool lounge, or a spot with good dancing and good energy. I’m all about creating memories with laughter, music, and great company.
Day 7: Reset + Reflect
The last day would be about winding down maybe a spa day, journaling, or grabbing coffee and sitting somewhere beautiful to reflect. We’d talk about the week, the memories we made, and what we’re grateful for before sending them off recharged and full of joy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are definitely a few people and influences that deserve recognition in my journey. First and foremost, my mom. She’s been a hairstylist most of her life, and just watching her work, stay consistent, and build relationships with her clients taught me more than she probably realizes. Her example showed me that it’s possible to turn a creative skill into a lasting career, and her quiet strength and work ethic continue to inspire me.
I also want to shout out my close circle friends and family who encouraged me, showed up for me, and reminded me of my potential, especially in those early days when I was just getting started. Their belief in me made it easier to bet on myself.
Lastly, I have to give credit to the clients who took a chance on me when my salon was brand new. They helped me build not just a business, but a community. Their trust, loyalty, and word-of-mouth support are a huge part of why I’m still here, doing what I love.
Success is never a solo act, and I’m deeply grateful for every person who’s been part of my story so far.
