We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My friend Keisha and I would never have thought that our phone conversation one random day would lead to us creating and starting our business. Chatting on the phone, we realized we were both frustrated with the lack of options to spend quality time with our daughters-and our mothers. We found ourselves doing the same activities over and over, going to the same playgrounds and events drained by the dull days. There was nothing available to help us vibrantly connect and grow closer with our daughters, only activities to numbly fill the time. So, wanting to fill that need, we created Modati and we are devoted to providing intimate experiences for Mothers & Daughters around the world- helping you connect in meaningful and intentional ways.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our business, Modati, curates events and experiences for Mothers and Daughters. We offer virtual events and activity boxes on our website that are sure to help bring connection while Moms and Daughters laugh and have fun together. We get so giddy seeing our customers bond and grow closer to each other. Moms and Daughters are looking for ways to not just be on their phones together, but ways to have some meaningful time and we are thrilled to be able to offer that. Our activity boxes are a great way to create this time. When the world thinks of mother daughter time, we want it to think of us, Modati. We’re passionate about time because it’s so fleeting and we want to make sure we steward it well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh so many places, Atlanta is so diverse! We’d start with a picnic at Piedmont Park (Mother daughter picnics are our favorite!), then we’d walk the beltline. We’d stop at Ponce City Market and visit the bookstore or maybe do some yoga. We’d have to have brunch at Pancake Social! We’d continue on the beltline probably the entire time. There are other great stops like Krog Street Market for ice cream. I’d also want them over near me in South Fulton, maybe visit Wolf Creek Library or take a hike at Cascade Springs Nature Reserve.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and my business partner. The only reason I’m able to be a small business owner, licensed therapist, social worker, Mom, mentor and on and on, is because my husband is a true partner. He supports me, encourages me, and makes the girls leave me alone when I’m working haha. He is such a wonderful man and I wouldn’t be here without him. Then there is my business partner Keisha. We often joke that Modati would still just be a word-and not a business- if it wasn’t for her. Her ambition fuels our business especially when our challenges seem insurmountable.
