We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Trahan – Oluwaloju and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business sort of found me. From the start it was my hobbies before it became my career. I guess you could say the process behind my business started with me trying everything else. I went to school for many things, but could never get away from my calling. The demand for my God giving talent never went away. And I continue with my passion from child prodigy to adult hood. It’s silly to say, but it took me years after exploring other avenues to realize I already had a career in my hands.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a traveling artist and hairstylist. The Founder of Amber Horizon Beauty and Photography Alliance. I’m involved in all things beauty -from hair and makeup, to photography. As a hairstylist I specialize in natural hair care and  hair growth. Apart from working in the salon, my work consists of traveling and working behind the scenes for events, photoshoots, films, and private clients. I also collaborated with many local businesses, assisting them with image and creating commercial quality content. I work in various salons to facilitate my local and out-of state-clients. It sounds luxurious but it has been really hard to keep up with. Most times that I would travel to my out-of-state-clients, I struggled to find a reliable salon that’s available for daily or weekly rentals. Situations like this has forced me to get out of my comfort zone. I had to learn to network with other stylists and salons. Through these relationships I’ve been able to stay a float and consistent. I have leaned that it’s more about who you know than anything. Few examples; having someone who trust me with the keys of their salon, having someone highly recommend me for a film, or have someone help me grow my business though word of mouth. I have found that It’s important to be kind to everyone. You never know how each person will impact your future. I believe this is one of the keys to my success so far. Along with plenty of prayer and fasting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Although I currently live in Houston TX. I’ve lived in many lively places, from Atlanta Ga to Los Angeles Ca. Still there’s no place like home. I’m a proud native Louisiana creole. Born in Lafayette La. Which was rated the “Happiest City in America” and the “Best Food City in the USA” in several articles. I visit home and work there quite frequently. This place I call home is full of heritage. I enjoy sharing my town with my guest. If I wanted to show my friends a good time, we would start with breakfast. Enjoying a dinning experience at the “ The French Press” located in Lafayette La, or simply just grab delectable coffee and boudin at the “Classic Cup” in our neighboring town “ Maurice, La”. For an Adventure I would suggest sightseeing. There are a lot of historic manors that are currently being used as museums in Lafayette La . Likely we would end up visiting “Acadian Village” in “ Lafayette, La “. Which is also where I got married. For lunch boiled seafood from “Simm Seafood” located in Lafayette La. I recommend their boiled crawfish and tripe when in season. To pair with that, a daiquiri at “New Orleans Original Daiquiris” located in Lafayette La. In the evening we would prepare for entertainment. I would probably take my guest dancing a local zodiac or swing out event. Are maybe a festival at a hosting neighboring town. Every other month different towns take turns hosting a festival to honor the harvest they provide. Some of the many festivals are “ The International Festival” in Lafayette La , “Shrimp and Petroleum Festival” in Morgan City La, “ The Cattle Festival” in Abbeville La , “Sugar Cane Festival” in New Iberia La, and so many more. There’s plenty of music, dancing, food, and fun to end the night. There’s always a celebration happening somewhere and places to enjoy with friends and family.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my family who recognizes my calling before I did. You’ve pushed and supported me through my journey. You’ve celebrated all my win and comfort me through all my loss. I would also like to thank my loyal clients. You motivate me to continue no matter how rocky the journey is. Without them I wouldn’t have my career. As a devoted Christian, none of this would exist without my lord and savior Jesus Christ. To whom I give all credit to.
