Meet Dr. Amber Robins-Hickson | Family Medicine Doctor and Period Expert

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Amber Robins-Hickson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After years of having heavy periods, I wanted a solution that would allow me to go through my day stress free during that time of the month. I envisioned having a panty that could keep a pad of any size in place while being leak resistant. As a family doctor, I also found that many of my patients were having the same frustrating issue along with questions about their periods and body changes. Years later I took the steps to bring my vision to life. Last year I launched Sanxtuary MD by Dr. Amber to help upgrade periods for women and girls.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Somewhere between studying and sleeping during medical school, I began to wonder if there was solution for my period leaks. I would get frustrated waking up in my own period blood and over time found that my patients felt the same way. I personally looked to products that were on the market to help, but none worked for me. I specifically was looking for both a leak-resistant panty and one that would hold her pad (no matter the size) in place.

As I furthered my career as a family medicine doctor, I began to realize that I had the power of creating just what I was looking for along with educating women on their health. One less-talked-about issue that disrupted the confidence of young girls and women was discussing what happens to our lady parts as we age and grow. If only women of every age could learn about their bodies, it would make a whole lot of difference.

With this vision in mind, I formed Sanxtuary MD, a company where women of all ages can learn about their bodies and have products to better manage their periods with confidence. Since we launched Sanxtuary MD by Dr. Amber has been featured in USA TODAY, Reviewed.com, Black Enterprise, Yahoo News, and Ebony. We have also been on of the few businesses to be chosen to take part in gBETA Medtech accelerator. I personally have used my product during my postpartum period, and this opened up a new use for our panty. With our period panties and period kits on the market, we will officially be launching My Period University with our first puberty course for girls and their moms.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have so many great memories going to the World of Coca Cola. It is always a great time no matter the age. I always find learning about the history of the company fascinating. It all was started by a pharmacist.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give the biggest Shoutout to my mother who has pushed me to dream big. She gave me permission early in life to think outside the box and to not limit what I could create. She has supported me in my dream of becoming a doctor, author, speaker, and inventor.
