We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Connley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I decided to start my own business as a full-time esthetician, I had to ask myself if this was something I love doing and is this a beneficial service for people. My answer was a definite yes, so then I had to figure out how can I stand out from other businesses to make my service look more appealing. Being in an industry of so many talented women doing the same exact service, I had to figure out how to set myself apart. Everyday is a learning process on ways to improve, get more creative and draw in more clients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a licensed Esthetician that provides skincare and beauty services to men and women in the DMV area. I specialize in eyelash extensions and body waxing. I am most proud of my ability to take on the risk of starting my own business full-time and building a consistent clientele. Building my business was not easy and I still have a long way to go but with the support of my family and friends and keeping a positive attitude, I have always been able to overcome my challenges. While there will always be more lessons to learn, I would say my biggest one so far is to know your worth and be confident in your journey. Everything may not happen all at once but it will happen when the time is right. Ive learned that when we rush things, we realize that we weren’t quite ready for it so its very important to be patient. Never compare your journey to anyone else.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First day I would take them to my favorite breakfast spot called Milk and Honey in bowie, Maryland. Then we would check out the sites in downtown DC where we could see the Monument, Martin Luther King Memorial and get adventurous and rent one of the city bikes. Second day we could visit the selfie museum in Tysons corner mall in Virginia then get dinner and drinks at Carlyle in Arlington. Third day we could enjoy the weather and visit the National Harbor in Oxon Hill. Fourth day we could bar hop on U street and have a famous DC pizza from &Pizza. Fifth day we would get brunch at Park on 14th street and enjoy a Day Party at a local rooftop in the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
None of my success and progress would have happened without the support of my family and friends. From my best-friend coming up with my business name, to my mom and sister quizzing me for my state board exam, to my dad encouraging me to take this business on full force. My village has believed in me on days when I didn’t even believe in myself. That type of support got me to where I am now and I will forever give recognition to them.
