We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber & Beatrice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber & Beatrice, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Our tagline is literally, “Giving Roses…because the world needs more.” Giving Roses is a bi-weekly podcast dedicated to seeking ways to appreciate life and those we love by giving roses and having thoughtful conversations. Roses can be given to anyone by simply telling them or by literally giving them flowers. We make both options available to our listeners around the world. Anyone can visit givingrosespod.com or go to our highlights on Instagram to screenshot our graphic and tell us about someone who has uplifted them. We read the nominations on our episodes, let our listeners vote on our Instastory, and send a bouquet of yellow roses to a lucky winner. Yet, everyone wins because they received an opportunity to express their appreciation in a unique way and we hope that the podcast encourages them to continue to do so.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are two line sisters (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) who believe in the importance of compassion for oneself and others. We both think deeply about our shortcomings, past opinions, and lessons learned. In turn, we have developed a strong value for personal growth by seeking knowledge through reading, listening to experts, and self-reflection. This we express through the podcast.
Beatrice had the idea for the podcast five years before launching, but finally got the courage to do so in August of 2020. She reached out to Amber, knowing that she could add her creative energy and technical skills to make it happen. To Beatrice’s surprise, Amber was ready to jump in immediately. During this time we set the precedent for what we wanted Giving Roses to be: thoughtful, uplifting, intentional, and an overall movement. What we didn’t expect was how vulnerable we would have to be to put ourselves out there in this way. After a few months of planning and recording (and overthinking), we launched in November of 2020.
With us being in two different time zones, completing grad school, and working several jobs, being consistent has been our greatest challenge, but also, our greatest source of pride. We often say, “We couldn’t do this without each other.” With two unique personalities (Beatrice an enneagram 5 and Amber an enneagram 7), our differences add perspective and humor to each episode. Also, in the literal sense, Beatrice curates the content and Amber produces it, so without the other, it simply wouldn’t get done.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we visit Atlanta, we like to visit For Keeps Bookstore and Reading Room (@forkeepsbooks). We love For Keeps because it’s Black-owned and provides a beautifully curated selection of reading material by Black authors. You can find vintage reading materials like Jet magazine or, signed first-edition releases by your favorite Black authors. The owner, Rosa Duffy, is kind and provides a warm and welcoming environment for all readers.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So basically, who would we like to Give Roses to? We want to Give Roses to Myleik Teele. Her podcast was the source of many of our personal conversations that brought us closer together. Myleik is someone that we are both inspired by as she encourages women like us to expand the way we think and experience life. We actually gave roses and dedicated an entire episode to her in our first season (one of our most popular episodes). She not only listened, but she shared it with her audience and it was a major highlight for the podcast. More than that, it was a full circle moment to see the woman that has inspired us so much receive her roses and show us love.
