We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Stevens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, what’s your definition for success?
For me, success is defined by the health and well-being of the animals in our care, the trust and satisfaction of the clients we serve, and the growth and fulfillment of the veterinary team I lead. It’s not just about clinical outcomes—it’s about creating an environment where quality medicine, compassion, and collaboration come together every day. When our team feels supported and our patients thrive, that’s success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been shaped by a deep commitment to animal care, a love for team-building, and a desire to make emergency veterinary medicine more human-centered—for both clients and staff. I didn’t take a straight or easy path to get here. There were long hours, difficult cases, self-doubt, and personal sacrifices. But I leaned on my mentors, remembered why I started, and learned to lead by example—with empathy, resilience, and accountability.

What sets me apart is my focus on people just as much as pets. As a medical director, I’m just as invested in my team’s development and well-being as I am in clinical excellence. I’ve been proud to help build a culture where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow. That’s a reflection of the values instilled in me by my dad, my mentors, and the incredible leadership at VEG ER for Pets.

What I want people to know is this: behind every emergency visit, every hard decision, every overnight shift, is a team of passionate people working together to make a difference. I’m proud to be one of them—and even prouder to help lead them. My story is one of grit, gratitude, and the belief that good medicine starts with good people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d make sure they saw why I love living here—it’s got this incredible mix of Southern charm, creativity, and energy. We’d kick things off with brunch at South City Kitchen in Midtown—can’t beat their fried chicken and waffles—then walk it off on the BeltLine, where you can people-watch, see local art, and stop for drinks at Ponce City Market.

One day would be all about history and culture: we’d visit the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site, both of which are deeply moving. For dinner, we’d go to Busy Bee Café—an iconic spot that’s full of soul, in every sense.

I’d definitely take them to a show at the Fox Theatre—it’s one of the most beautiful venues in the country—and maybe sneak in a rooftop drink at 9 Mile Station afterward. Another night, we’d hang out in East Atlanta Village or Little Five Points, grab tacos from El Tesoro, and listen to some live local music.

For a nature break, Piedmont Park or a day trip to Stone Mountain would be on the list, maybe with a picnic or hike involved. And we’d have to do a relaxed Sunday with coffee from Chrome Yellow and vintage shopping in West Midtown or Inman Park.

Atlanta is full of interesting people—from artists and chefs to tech innovators and community leaders—and I’d want my friend to experience that side too. The city has a way of feeling like a big community, and I think that’s what makes it so exciting and easy to fall in love with.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have people in my life who’ve shaped my career—my husband, who has supported me every step of the way, my dad, who taught me the value of hard work and empathy; my mentors, who guided me with their wisdom and experience; and the creators and leaders of VEG ER for Pets, who continually inspire me to lead with purpose and heart.
