We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am originally from Philadelphia, PA but mostly grew up right outside of Charlotte, NC. When my parents decided to move our family to NC, I was very reluctant. I knew my life was going to change, but I never imagined how much, This move was a culture shock, to say the least, but it taught me a very important lesson; change is the only constant in life. This lesson has allowed me to take risk and not fear the unknown. So when I had the idea to start a business I didn’t fear it, I embraced it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own a small candle company, Grace Lee Candles. We specialize in handmade soy wax candles and wax melts. I started this business back in June 2019. This business started as a hobby and a way to save money (because I bought a lot of candles). It quickly turned into friends of friends asking me to make candles for them. That is when I knew, I could be onto something. With bright eyes, I launched Grace Lee Candles but never knew what challenges I would face being an entrepreneur. There are have been weeks with no sales, damaged orders, missed opportunities, etc. but I had to keep going. Now, I am happy to say that we are doing very well! I have created a customer base that is loyal and encouraging. Grace Lee Candles is well on its way to becoming a household name, and I won’t stop until it is. This brand is more than candles, it’s a testimony of what can happen when you dream big, put the work in and trust that God will deliver. .
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is dedicated to my Grandmother; Grace West. As a little girl, I remember my Grandma doing my hair and teaching me the importance of presenting yourself well at all times. She taught me that the way I show up in the world is reflective of how I show up for myself. I never knew how impactful this would be in my life, until I was a lot older. Now, I make sure that my business is reflective of that lesson. I want to make sure each candle I make is reflective of who I am and who my Grandma made me to be. When she passed last year, I felt more than ever the fire to keep her legacy alive through my candle company; Grace Lee Candles. I dedicated this to her because above all else, I want to make her proud.
