Meet Alivia Gilyard | Momprenuer & CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alivia Gilyard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alivia, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from a city in NJ 15 minutes outside of Manhattan, New York, by the name of Jersey City. Growing up in Jersey City has shown me a lot. It’s taught me how to not only literally survive, but how to persevere when you have so many odds against you. I grew up in a Christian two parent household, and also attended Catholic school throughout all of my years of schooling. Both of my parents worked very hard to ensure that I had a good education. Although my city may have been rough, I knew once I got home I was in my place of safety. I grew up in a very tight knit family as I am the third of four children. My older sibling was always a role model to me. With her being exactly 10 years older, I got to see her accomplish many of her goals and milestones in life which has moved me to push just as hard as she has. Both of my parents have worked their whole lives. My mom is a pancreatic cancer survivor and my dad is currently on dialysis. Seeing my parents not make any excuses throughout my whole life has taught me that not only is anything possible but keep your head up while doing it no matter how hard it may seem.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For a long time I tried to balance being an entrepreneur and a full-time corporate employee. I knew that if I had the time to fully dedicate myself to my business, I would be able to reach the places and people that I wanted to reach. Starting my own business wasn’t easy and still is not easy, but the work is worth it. I overcome challenges every day by taking a deep breath, strategizing, preparing and executing. A lot of lessons were learned along the way but one of the most important lessons that I’ve learned is to give yourself grace through this process. We don’t always have all of the answers but if you’re willing to learn, you will be very successful. Thelitcandleco. is not your ordinary candle company. Not only are your senses being activated while burning your candle but each candle is hand poured and made from soy wax and other organic ingredients to help promote a healthy clean burn. On top of all of these great features, our candles also are statement pieces. These are not your normal basic candles, that you’re used to seeing. We feature desert themed candles like nana puddin, strawberry cheesecake and even cereal bowls! We also carry other cool designs and themes.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a lover of art, so after a nice brunch, at the Avalon in Alpharetta, we would then probably head to the high museum of art. The exhibits in pieces that they have are absolutely incredible. The night would be ended with a nice dinner at Hugo’s oyster bar, followed by drinks at Cru lounge.
As a mom, I am always looking for kid friendly things to do. The children’s Museum of Atlanta along with a Sloomoo Institute are such great picks for both adults and children. The beltline is a great place for families. It is actually one of our favorites. We love walking, and exploring the different graffiti murals and restaurants along the strip

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will have to give a shout out to my parents and siblings. My parents have always been very supportive of me and my dreams. They have always cheered for me no matter what type of new venture I was looking to get into. It’s important as an adult to have parents who are understanding, loving and very caring of you and your well-being.
My sister Falene and my mom are my closest friends. My sister has always been one of my number one fans. She is always willing to listen to my crazy and random ideas. She exudes, strength, power, and knowledge.
A very special shout-out goes to my late brother in law Bishop Cory M. best. I’m so thankful that my brother-in-law quickly became my brother. He was always rooting for me and letting me know just how powerful I am and how successful I will be. He always kept me covered in prayer , if there was anything I ever needed my brother was there. There have been many people to help me get to where I am now, I am forever grateful.
