We had the good fortune of connecting with Alissa Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alissa, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Kontrol Kourse was created with the idea in mind that true control is understanding how to let things naturally flow. A lot of times we try to determine and dictate the final results in our life by trying to control the outcome but I’ve found that when you really dive deeper into what it truly means to control this course of life that we’re all on, you’ll start to understand that the true definition of control is letting go, and being present in the moment. So much happens when you decide to release power and simply attract all things in your life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Kontrol Kourse is an experience. A journey with so many open opportunities to grow not only as a dancer but as an individual, Kontrol Kourse is where dreams are developed. We take most pride in helping women build their confidence on and off the dance floor, and truly understanding the importance of discipline. Kontrol Kourse is currently three years in the making but our founder and creative director. Alissa Smith has been working and developing herself, her whole entire life, learning different values through trial and error and building her dance skills overtime to implement core beneficial values, within the Kontrol Kourse experience. “ Releasing Kontrol” has been the biggest obstacle that she had to overcome in her life and her dance journey. Controlling your course is simply learning how to release control while also carrying determination and discipline to develop yourself overtime. Kontrol Kourse has a complex meaning and wants the world to know that anything is possible as long as you are disciplined, confidence and continuously developing your dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our personal favorite spot to hang and chill in the city is Justin Roberts studios. This is an intimate event space in the city of Philadelphia it can also be used as a dance studio. We love this spot because this is our home studio where we provide all of our classes and experience heels training, but also if you ever want to rent it out to chill with some friends, or simply have a intimate dinner night or game night the space is flexible for anything you want to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The art form and culture of dance deserves the most recognition for paving the way and allowing Kontrol Kourse to even exist today. Through dance, we are allowed to express, escape, release, and truly find ourselves on the dance floor. This is a journey that you embark on over time and develop your skills the same way we embark on life’s journey, releasing control, and being present in the moment. Without the culture and evolution of dance Kontrol Kourse would be nonexistent.
