Meet Alissa Heller | Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alissa Heller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alissa, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art has always been an outlet in my life growing up. It is the best way for me to express emotions and how I feel so as an adult, instead of a paint brush, I use a makeup brush. It started with just friends and family for their weddings and special events but last year, my friends pushed me to get myself out there and start my own business as a Makeup Artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My background is in painting with acrylics. I love the feeling of putting paint onto a canvas and seeing where it takes me. I never sold my art much and as I got into college and life got in the way, my method of art changed from canvas to faces. Makeup is beautiful, a way to express yourself or to refine your image in ways that you have control over. I love color matching skin tones and making a custom shade that fits my clients so perfectly. Using different shadows and highlights to create high cheek bones or creating depth with eyeshadows. It wasn’t easy learning to adjust to other faces besides your own at first but my college roommate Sara asked almost daily for me to do her hair and makeup. Forcing me out of my comfort zone, I fell in love with making people look their best. Everyone should feel beautiful and I love helping them look beautiful on their most special days. I’m newer to the industry so I am still building up my clientele. It is not an instant thing and getting my work out there has been hard but it is worth every struggle to be here doing what I love.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s a long list of places I would bring a visiting friend besides the traditional- Aquarium, World of Coke, we’d be going to Heirloom Market BBQ, walk the beltline and stop at all the bars and breweries. Little 5 and downtown Decatur for shopping Braves games are always a good time as well as going out at the Battery after. Downtown Marietta has my favorite bookstore “The Reading Attic” and some great restaurants including an amazing atmosphere with all the old buildings.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends. They have all been so supportive of me. I am surrounded by an amazing group of women who deserve so much thanks! Without their push to branch out, I would still be doing only their faces or my sisters. Thank you to Sara, Amanda, Carmen, Meredith, Mariah, Sarah, and Trang as well as my sisters Megan and Kara!
