We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Thomason and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’m pretty sure it chose me! Music has been a part of my life since before I even understood what it was.
The humming of the hymns from my grandmothers, the voices of the gospel choir in church, the beating of the drums which guide our feet.
I felt it everywhere and knew I was meant to be a part of that experience.
As a vocalist, I sing and use my voice to create and evoke emotion.
Whether it be through my own words, a song, or a character I play, I wish to inspire all who listen.
For me, to sing is to BREATHE.
And I want to share that.
As for Voice-over, it helps me to be unapologetically me!
I grew up loving cartoons and anime, a medium so freeing and enrapturing.
It builds an escape from reality, limited only by the minds of the creator.
The personalities and roles in which to challenge yourself are infinite!
Many can tell you that I am incredibly silly, yet passionate, and when I am given a character, I step IN.
To be a voice actor, you must first know how to ACT.
That is putting your mind, body, and spirit into portraying what is created and making everyone believe it true.
I want to be the black girl inspired by black girls, who inspire OTHER black girls.
To make a living and do what you love is a beautiful thing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is auditory-based.

It’s something that captures your attention with the hopes of drawing you closer and leaving you wanting more.

Our ears are insatiable, always searching for a new sound to pique our interest.

What sets me apart is my outlook on the power a single voice can hold.

I do many things, but voice is my core.

My career started when I got my first job in radio.

At the University of West Georgia’s Media Day, I learned that we had an on-campus radio station and I was ecstatic having grown up listening to some of Atlanta’s hottest hip-hop & R&B stations.

The WOLF Internet Radio, now WOLF Radio, fostered students’ interest in media by teaching the ins-n-outs of what it takes to run a station and produce a live show.

It was there that I learned another way to use my voice.

In addition to being told I had a melodious voice, I also had a talent for producing audio spots.

Soon after, I was hired on as Production Manager for the station.
This included writing, recording, and producing on-air spots, as well as scouting other talents for a diverse listenership.

Working at the station also offered me the freedom to join as a board operator on a podcast I helped create called The Feed, and become an on-air personality, DJ Melodious.

I continued to perform alongside my station job, from singing in recitals to acting in operettas, and touring schools with the UWG Music Department ensembles.

After graduating in the Spring of 2019, I began working Promotions at 104.7 the Fish and started interning in Radio Production at Georgia Public Broadcasting.

While it was an extremely busy, yet fulfilling few months, it all came to an end at the beginning of 2020.

I found myself without work and nowhere to go.

Dejected, yet determined, I searched for a job doing something I loved.

No longer able to sing, perform or produce for audiences, I turned to UpWork and started working as the voice-over artist, Miss Melodious!

It was a learning curb trying to figure out how to build a home studio, but with savings, rearranging and a lot of patience, I was on my way.

Once things started to open back up, I began working as an actress and Gamemaster at an escape room in Brookhaven.

After almost a year, I began working at the Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center as a studio assistant.

This library holds within its walls a self-service studio equipped with audio, video, photography, graphic design, and editing equipment.

Free to the public, we assisted patrons in setting up recording sessions, offering production expertise and programs to teach creative techniques.

It was at the Creative Studios that I was able to jump back into media, connecting with dedicated creatives and professionals along the way.

The Creative Studios taught me about what it meant to be an independent creative, hustling in your field to make your work seen.

I now work at Building Kidz, teaching Music & Theater, coordinating showcases, and spreading the joy of music to children.

Currently, my voice-over business is entering its fourth year; bringing to life new characters and projects for non-profit organizations, with pursuits of animation on the horizon!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is a booming city, and there are sooo many unexplored places, even for a native like me. First of all, if its con season, we would definitely hit up some of Atlanta’s most popular anime conventions.
Anime Weekend Atlanta, Dragon Con and Momo Con are some of the largest conventions in Georgia for anime, cosplay, voice-over and random parties where you’ll connect some of the best people from all walks of fandom.
I love to cosplay and get into character so its always fun to met others who do the same.
You’ll find some incredible talent too!
Last time I found an elf choir and we performed melodious music after only an hour of rehearsal!
When I am not working, I like to relax, so we would definitely chill at this Japanese bakery called Sweet Hut.
It has a cute modern aesthetic with tons of fresh pastries and boba to enjoy with free Wi-Fi to boot.
My love of theater will certainly drag us out to see a musical at the Fox Theater or the Atlanta Opera at Cobb Energy Center.
With insanely talented performers, it is music appreciation at its finest.
To wrap it up, skating at Cascade is a must!
It’s my home rink and I love it despite what anyone says.
If you want the full experience, Sundays are your night.
Afterwards, we’ll replenish those calories at the Vortex, a foodie’s burger heaven.
Once a year I enjoy their famous Coronary Bypass Burger, and trust me, when you see it you’ll understand.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be anywhere without GOD & my family by my side.

There is something magical about what a blessing can do for your life and I can feel that I have been living off of the blessings of those who came before me.

Someone, in particular, I want to thank is my great-grandmother, Mildred W. Brown.

She has been the rock in our family, the provider, and a source of strength for when it seems like the world’s gone crazy.

Suga was the one who noticed my passion for music, then enrolled me and my cousin in the choir and dance team at the age of 5.

I also want to shout out my family, friends, and peers who constantly pour praise and motivation into my life.

You know who you are!

Lastly, I want to thank the people and clients who took a chance on me.
You allowed me into your creative process to help bring your vision to life!

Organizations include: Elizabeth Baptist Church Atlanta, The WOLF Internet Radio, Phi Delta Musicus of the University of West Georgia, Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center & Building Kidz of Roswell.
